Need a little help please.

Long story short, my nephew, Ben has been left a watch, he has recently got into watches and bought his first "good watch."

This was left to him by Uncle Alwyn, we will get it cleaned up for him and sent to a watch repairer to get it running as well as it can. I wonder if anyone can give any info please? Do not need a "what it's worth" this is a keeper and if it costs more to get it cleaned and running than it is worth, then so be it. I wonder if anyone could add some information please.

Heres the e mail from Ben, I wont tell his mum about the spelling mistakes. (Because I'm just as bad).

Hi Uncle Dave I’ve had a little look about the watch and found out it’s an automatic watch from the 1960s, I wound it up and found out it looses a lot of time. In fact it probly runs at about half speed and I’m not sure why. Also I think it’s in the wrong box as it says quartz and has a receipt from 1979 inside. Hopefully you could find out a little more about it.

Ben

I have tried to enhance the photos as much as I can.

Got a clearer view of the caseback Dave? The numbers will tell you the model ref and the month and year of production. Also does it say waterproof or water resistant?

Looks like a 1960s 6602-8040 anyway. Nice watch.

Thanks Adam, I will e mail him back, I can just see that the first numbers are 6602, really appreciate your help.

Having got it in Lightroom, it certainly looks like water proof rather than water resistant, he will probably e mail me back this evening.

I got this back from Ben.

On the face it says waterproof and I can’t get a photo of the back, it’s too shiny to focus. It reads ‘stainless steel 6602-8010 water proof 7700156’.

Watch was made in July 1967. It's a manual wind non-quickset.

A new crystal, good cleaning, and an overhaul and he'll have a nice everyday watch.

Doesn't appear to be the original bracelet, rather, a period correct stainless expansion one.

Yep, July 1967. Seiko started putting the seahorse logo on the casebacks of waterproof manual-wind watches in the early 1960s, and later the "Sea horse" became a model in its own right with that cool dial font. There were several kinds/references of Sea horse, and they are somewhat more desirable than no-name watches from the same period. By the mid-1960s they were popular mid-range watches.

Here's one below from a 1965 catalog, right next to a 62MAS, which as you probably know was Seiko's first real diver and is highly collectible today. I've also attached a few pics (including a seahorse logo on the back of an earlier watch) from my Japanese reference books.

Vintage Seikos, even lower and mid-range, seem to hold up really well. I'm sure it can be serviced and made to look like new. You may well find a good aftermarket crystal by searching 6602-8010 on eBay. There's at least one seller in the UK offering a wide variety of "new" vintage Seiko replacement parts.

Excellent Adam, thank you very much, I will pass this on to Ben, it has brought his watch to life.

I am really sorry but I seem to have deleted the original photos at the start of the thread from Imgur, it has taken awhile but we picked Bens watch up this afternoon. I think it is fabulous and to say it is 50 years old is amazing. We got a leather strap and are really pleased.

Wow - someones done a cracking job on that, looks fantastic. That could easilly pass for a current model - and great to see the Seiko design hallmarks shown with the hands, hour markers and dial treatment still present today.

We gave Ben his watch on Sunday, he is absolutely delighted, it looks fabulous for a 50 year old watch. We have another young WIS.

I would have been absolutely stoked to receive this watch. I'm sure your nephew is/will be bitten hard by the WIS bug.
