16610LV - Flaking Indies

I wondered if I could get a collective opinion on the flaking on this submariner?

It's not something I've personally seen before, certainly not to this level, considering it's a relevantly recent Z serial watch. I'm not too sure what could have caused it to flake in the first place?

In terms of repair options, ideally wouldn't want to replace the dial, from research I believe you can stabilize the flaking or look at filling in the lume but it's 50/50 as to if it will make the situation better? Has anyone had similar work completed in the past?

Flaking of the lume, at first I didn’t understand. I presume this condition has developed since you’ve owned the watch. Are you the original owner, purchased new from an AD? At first glance it looks misapplied, as it’s affecting all the hour markers.

Other than taking it back to your AD for an assessment I don’t have any advice.

I’m not an expert, but I believe that may be a bit beyond stabilizing it with the paint flaking to the point it’s covering the metal portion of the indices. Any sort of stabilization even if attempted I feel would be time consuming to the point it would be easier just to replace it. If the dial has some sentimental value I’m sure you could find someone to help, but I really believe looking at it based on the progression of that deterioration it’s much easier and better to replace.

Wow the 5 o’clock is peeling like an apple. My first thought is water damage. As others asked if you’re not the original owner there’s no telling what happened before you got it. It looks like it was dunked crown open in a pot of boiling water. I think a dial swap is the only real option here.

I'm no expert but have read in the past like patina the lume may have a tendency to crack/flake with age. She is not young and may be just showing her age. For me I would embrace the transformation and let the watch change naturally without the cosmetic interference. Movement service only. Beauty Sub!

Maybe it’s just the photos but that looks like a supercase with an aluminum bezel insert and an incorrect dial (beyond the hobby paint on the lume).

Why are there watermarks on the photo from Chrono24?

Either watch is fake or it had serious water damage…

It’s for sale in the UK by a private seller on Chrono24

Also , says it’s reserved.

If the watch isnt yours OP, then I'd bet this is an odd re-lume job.

Hard crowd to please today.

As I said earlier in the thread, the watch is for sale on Chrono24

The OP is asking for advice on what to do with the flaky dial.

I don’t know if he’s bought it or not, but I would give the watch a wide berth.

Watch has a few red flags. Case and SEL do not appear to be correct. Dial is suspect as lume plots would not peel like that. Does this M serial (not Z serial) come with papers? If you are considering buying, I would not.

According to the advert, it comes with papers, but no box.

I reviewed the chrono24 ad. No box probably explains the fake pillow the watch is wrapped around in all the photos.

Regardless.... the case and SEL’s are not correct. Watch should be avoided.
