There was a thread a few days back about which Rolex models
had zero gold on the exterior, and it seems like the Explorer 1665
is one of the very few.

Doesnt change its toughness, but this somehow makes me feel that
its an even more 'tool-ly' watch

I love the patina on the face of fusionstorms 1655!
Have had one myself since 1987, that I have worn every day (my father had bought it for his infant son in 1970), and it does not have near as nice patina!

Great stuff.
My first day on the forum.

Hi - I have one just like your "staright orange" model. Inherited from my uncle, via my father! My uncle must have bought it 35-40 years ago. I am interested in finding out a value for insurance purposes. In the past I have only had it covered for a new replacement, but now realise that is hopelessly inadequate.

Can you help?

Welcome! Now you have to post scans of your 1655......

I fell in love with the patina as soon as I saw it when I met with the prospective seller. The case and bezel were more nicked up than I cared for, but the dial was perfect and the patina clinched it for me.

one of the oldest 1655 seen : case number in the 2.72 range ( produced in 1971 ) and back punched <II-71 >.
please note the very tiny crown guards ( aka < pointed > ) used in the first batch of 1655 ( untill 2.9-3.0 circa ).
the dial has is the so called mk1-0 ( with the shortest Rolex crown ).

here are mine (both renovated @ RSC San Francisco 2004 & 2005)
this one is my 2nd Rolex, first one I bought new, back in 1973 in Hong Kong w/ my first decent commission

this one was my dad's he liked mine, so he got one, in 1974, also purchased new in
Hong Kong.........

Hey all, great thread!

I just happened to have uploaded an older snap of my straight-hand so here ya' go.

The watch itself is away getting the spa treatment (for the movement, really) with Bob Ridley. Will update when it returns.

Original Full set MK1's & 2's are quite hard to find, but the later ones are a bit easier (I.e. MK3, MK4).
