One of those moments-red Sub

So, Im having a drink with a bunch of friends today. One of the mates brought along his 80yr old father, a very sweet gentleman who used to be a British Army doctor.
Well, it took me 0.3 seconds to see what was on his wrist. A gorgeous red Sub which he bought in ‘74 when he was stationed in HKG. He paid, as he reacalls, 37 pounds for it. (Where they that cheap!?)
He wore the hell out of the watch for the next 4 decades, never serviced it.....so it’s all original.
He knew exactly what he has and how much they are worth. I offered to clean it for him and polish the plastic. I look forward giving this puppy a bath.

He doesn’t hv the box but he reckons he still has the papers. I asked him to look for them.
Once cleaned and plexi polished this is gonna be a stunner. Look at that bezel.

Tha dial actually is in top condition. It ll be obvious once the plastic is polished.

Wow, he should really have it serviced. If for nothing else preserving the dial and hands.

I am simply in awe of the raw & used state of the watch. Please show us once it's been cleaned up!

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks. It is not a matter of me buying it because it is not for sale. Im just helping them clean it and make it look good. I feel sorry that dial is not visible.

I agree, I told them to consider a service and I told them not to send it to Rolex....and I would suggest them a couple of specialised places that will not mess around with any or the original elements.

Yes, what a tool watch indeed. I asked him if the water is still water resistant and he reckons it is. He does not keep it away from water.
I have my doubts here especially because I want to give it a good clean.

Fantastic watch. Snap more photos of the case since it is supposed to be unpolished. The photos can be used as a reference for all in the future.

Shall do once we get together again. Alas, might be a while as the gentleman lives a few hours away.....

Amazing condition. All the hallmarks of consistent use but all of the things that are so critical to value (unpolished case, perfect patina and dial).
