I Don't Get White Gold...

I know I'm in the VAST minority here in that I don't care for white gold at all. I know there's a subtle difference in hue and know that it weighs more but I'll address the elephant in the room and say that it looks like stainless. Shocking, I know. Matter of fact, and again I'll expect push back on here, I bet if there were two identical models in stainless and white gold, 90% of people on here couldn't tell the difference visually. I think that gold should well....look kind of like gold. And again, just my opinion the same goes with platinum. I understand that Rolex offers different dial/bezel combinations for them but IMO still look a hell of a lot like stainless to me.

Some people are less about what other people think of them and being ostentatious (i.e. big brand logos, shiny YG etc. ) and prefer class and subtlety - enter WG

To each his own

+1
A great way to enjoy the weight of PM and as you said, not be ostentatious.
Also, the dials that come with PM only make it a must do with some references.

This. Plus, if I can get WG for less than SS bc of craziness in the market, then I will all day long. . And my work environment is conservative. I can’t show up with my wrist dripping in YG.

I think there are a lot of members (perhaps older?) who seem to have a thing for Gold and PM on here.
I can’t see why the small precious metal amount adds so much to msrp.
But then I am not into bling

Small?
Ok.
Hold an SS BLRO in one hand and then hold a PM BLRO on the other.
You’ll see how “small”.

WG is softer too, I recently quit wearing my WG wedding ring and got a $12 SS one, looks about the same and no scratches. There's a reason SS watches are so popular.

While I don’t own a PM, realistically, honestly, candidly, openly, there are more SS because less can afford PM, plain and simple. Not the only reason, but a big one.

A lot of people like the fact that platinum or WG looks like ss. As said above, it’s less ostentatious, perhaps doesn’t turn off coworkers or friends, whatever. There was an interesting post in the last few days about a fireman that wears his WG sub to work, which he wouldn’t do if it was YG. Personally, I think having WG or platinum Rolex would be fantastic. On the other hand, I don’t think I’d wear a YG Rolex. A bit too bling for me.

It does scratch more easily; which is the only thing I dislike. :/

Ok I apologise for the “old” remark but then again in that group!

When I tried to say “small amount of precious metal” in comparison to the retail price - this is what I was trying to say:-

Having just gone on Rolex website UK

Submariner date
Steel £6550 (good luck finding one)
T/T. £10,350
GOLD £26,350

So why is the £19,800 GBP more cost for gold over steel when the true value of that PM is way less in metal terms.
But again this is coming from a reasonable person who also does not like bling and gold anyway. This compounded by the same person hoping to get S/S at msrp (so perhaps less sane by my own admission!)

Side by side they are very different.

The white gold is warmer.

The white gold will not suffer from corrosion like stainless steel.

Agree the SS is often more desirable but the white gold will generally have different dial options.

If you assume for the sake of argument that the entire watch is made of gold (it's not), we're talking about ~5.5 troy oz of gold, or about $7,000 of gold.

Price of SS BLRO:$9,250
Price of WG BLRO: $36,750
Delta: $27,500

There's only so much material in a watch. The metal alone only explains a small fraction of the increased cost.

He or she who wears a white gold watch is less concerned, or not concerned at all, about others knowing the watch is gold and not stainless steel.

If you want flash and others to know you are wearing a gold Rolex, buy rose gold or yellow gold.

White gold is nice and subtle. Its also under the radar and not as loud as yellow or rose gold.

I wear it for myself, no problem for me if 99% of casual observers think its SS.

I choose what metal my watches are based on what appeals to me aesthetically. I have TT and SS watches. PM will eventually join the party. Whatever PM I chose will be because I like it, not because I want people to know it's PM based on its color.

After I got my 116619LB, my BLNR and Daytona are just sitting in the locker.

Doesn't feel like stainless at all. Beautiful heft. Rolex white gold retains its hue over time without need for rhodium plating or refinishing.

I absolutely love yellow gold, no argument.

But I have white gold DJ with roman numeral rhodium dial and appreciate its sophisticated look. The bezel gleams in the light. I think it's understated, refined, classy and sleek.

I buy all my girlfriend's jewelry in white gold or platinum. I love how it pairs with diamonds and really pops off her dark skin.

Anyone worth their salt when it comes to these things, especially a Rolex, would know it's white gold.

But to each his own. My dad leases a new BMW coupe every 3 years. Every 3 years he gets silver with black interior. I tell him to change it up. Get a "color" cause it looks like primer!

⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️ This! Also the fact that there’s some dial/bezel configurations you can’t get in SS...

Ok so what is the value of the SS in a SS watch as compared to its price?
SS is about $.30-50/lb give or take. What is the weight of your SS watch?

When my parents got engaged in 1964 my dad, broke, could either buy a ring for my mother or a used Pontiac to go to his new job fresh out of college. She said get the Pontiac. So he bought her a pearl engagement ring.

On their 25th anniversary he bought her a massive new diamond engagement ring which he picked out the diamond and the setting. It is so ostentatious that she feels embarrassed and where's it upside a lot of times so she doesn't look like a show off. My father demanded she wear it the right way!
