I would've never owned the old model. But if budget is limited I would buy the new AK or its cousin, the 39mm EXP 1.

The 3-6-9 has always been a dial feature of the Air King. Except for times when it had a date. The part that is new is the minutes in lieu of batons. That is in keeping with many pilot watch designs. The Air King used to be smaller than the explorer, otherwise it was pretty much an explorer. Once they made it the same size as the new explorer, they probably needed some way to differentiate the two watches. The minutes on the dial does that plus makes it more like a pilots watch. I suppose they could have put the minutes all the way around, but keeping the 3-6-9 keeps it an Air King.

It is a nice watch, but not my style. I think they should have used the new 3-6-9 from the new Explorer. Would have tied the dial together and made it more readable.

It looks a lot better than the old design but at the same, the dial looks too busy.

I am not a fan... dial looks like they threw up a bunch of numbers to see what "stuck". Definitely way to busy for my taste

I'm a fan of the new model, I think it's a great look. There are far 'busier' dials out there

I love it, just wish it was bigger. Shouldn't these pilot watches have bigger faces for easier reading???

My complaints with the new AK is the dial and the size. I am a huge fan of the 34mm AKs and have no interest in a 40mm version. The size made the AK unique and distinctive. Being 40mm it seems like just another Rolex. The dial is too much like the Explorer I dial and forgets the heritage of the AK.

As to the new release, I love it.. Busy, hardly - anybody looked at a Breitling lately..

For a pilot, a quick look at seconds in large numbers can be a plus when timing turns etc. It may not be done much any more, but it is definitely a throwback to early pilots needs..

It's one I want to take a better look at, and I said that I was done picking up new watches !!!
I concur.

I like it. About time Rolex released a sporty pilots watch. The Air-King is the perfect platform.

Nay.

I'm really impressed with all the new releases this year but I respectfully pass on the new AK. Wish they kept it the same size. Don't like the new dial either.

+1 and the two sizes of Arabics are weird.
