Not me...a friend I caught up with last night.

This is a friend who was born and raised in Italy, now lives in the U.S., and travels internationally for his work.

I'd noticed for some time that he wears a Daytona SS, and finally mentioned it last night at dinner.

He told me:

- he bought the watch in 1987

- he's worn in every day since then

- it is his only watch, and has been his only watch since 1987

- he has NEVER had it serviced ("My wife, she takes her watches, her Jaeger LeCoultre, her Cartier, etc, in every couple years for $600. Ridiculous.")

- he wears it for all activities, including motorcycling

- he takes it off and sticks it in his carry-on when passing through airport security

- he won't wear it in Rome, Barcelona, Mexico, Brazil, etc. (seeing my new Deepsea, "Don't wear that in Rome.")

- when he travels, he doesn't change the time ("Is too much hassle. I forget. Then I look at my phone. Phone is for time, watch is no longer for time, is accessory.")

And, I must say, it looks BEAUTIFUL!

I should've taken a pic...I will the next time I see him.

That’s the way to do it but I set the time on my watch when I travel and leave my phone on home time.

Awesome! I aspire to be like your friend. I am fortunate to have several pieces and I do wear them everywhere and rarely take them off...save for the Daytona as it was my fathers.

One of my dad's watches hasn't been serviced since new. It's now +55 old. Manual wind, and running well within +/- a day.

As WIS, I’m not sure why we are gushing over a guy that looks at his watch as just an accessory and doesn’t set the time. Odd

I love the process of changing the time and winding a piece. It’s bonding.

I suppose his carefree way of enjoying his watch resonates with a lot here who shake our heads at what the hobby is transforming into these days.

I have a friend with a steel Sub that hasn't been serviced in 33 years.

It's in terrible shape, the bezel rotates in both directions and the clasp broke long ago.

However, the watch still runs well and keeps perfect time. Amazing.

I aspire to be like this guy! I'm still new to Rolex and the quality, beauty, and time keeping has me wanting to keep them pristine, but at the same time I want to just wear and enjoy them. I guess what gives me pause it that the SS models are hard to get and not easily replaced. I need to learn to get over that, life is short, and just wear and enjoy the few I have. I was wearing my DJ41 at work for about a week, it got a few scratches on the bracelet, stopped by the AD and they polished them out and it looks new again, now I don't want to wear it because it looks so good! It's truly a sickness.

I like his attitude and I'm in complete agreement except for the accessory comment. Mine are watches and always will be to me. My kind of watch wearer.

My partner doesn't adjust her watch when we travel...pretty easy to add os subtract an hour or two but kind of bugs me a bit......its the first thing i do when i get on the plane...feels like the start of my adventure
