What is this Explorer?

The gentleman who has it says it's a 6298, but the 6298s I can find have 12-3-6-9. I might be able to purchase it locally for a fair price (if I can figure out what that is!): he says it had a full service at Rolex in ’97: nothing since.

It does look like a 6298. You can have the seller remove the strap and photograph the numbers inside of the lugs.

I'm not an expert but the dial may be refinished. I'm sure someone with more knowllege on the subject will chime in.

+1 on refinished dial. Hands dont seem to match the markers and it seems like the patina is not consistent for its age

Almost certainly a refinished dial. That lume at the 3-6-9 markers is way too green.

If I can get pics, I'll post.

I was considered about the possibility of a refin. I recall reading that if one sends a watch back to Rolex they will do one as part of the service. I've made enquiries, and will let you know.

Thanks!

I'm not sure if it's refinished or not. Lume can be redone without refinishing the dial. Would like to see some higher resolution photos.

And: it's a new dial as of '97. The original ("some fading") would be included.

Well, the guy told me he'd send pics of the old dial and then sold it before he did. For less than I would've offered. You win some…

The 6298 have multiple dial versions some with "Explorer" and some with "Precision"

Please send the serial number so we can dig to the next level ...

This one seems to be early 1950's, what is the movement on this? A296?

Thanks,

Tony

It was a 775 movement. Can't get the serial, unfortunately it's been sold.

He didn't have one: he wanted "a range" I'd pay. And as I wouldn't until I'd seen the new dial, he sold it for $3500.

You did okay not to overpay for it...you don't want one with a refinished dial.

The search continues!

Its actually a good thing that you didnt end up buying this watch. Youll be better off if you find an all original example. Good luck on your search!

A fellow forum-member bought this watch recently (from the seller I was dealing with, who apparently did not sell it when he told me he did) and it's being inspected now by Rolex Canada to determine the age of the dial. It was not redialled in 1997 (that's what's known now), and it's possible that it was simply re-lumed.

So if you see it pop up for sale here, you can ask after the official Rolex opinion and not rely on the info the (very odd) original seller gave me.

You don't need an opinion from Rolex Canada to know that this dial is refinished.
