Sea Dweller 116600 or wait for new Sub?
Hey all,
Have an opportunity to go for a very lovely single owner SD4K 116600. I had the sub date, but sold that due to some redundancy with my GMTs. Also picking up a BB58 on leather soon. I still want a diver with a date, and I have a good enough relationship with my AD that I could likely get the new Sub (if there is one) in a year. Just wondering if I’m silly for turning this SD4K down. It’s very fairly priced (13.5 usd), but we’re three weeks away (I think) from seeing new Rolex releases. Truth be told, I really appreciated the tapered lugs and lack of cyclops on the Sea Dweller. Any input is appreciated. |

Maybe go for the SD4K, then once you get your eyes on new Sub determine if it's worth selling the SD4K for the new Sub. |

I was/am going through a similar process, but for me it's difficult to pay $13.5k and above for a used SD4K when I can get a new Sub for much less.

Ya I thought it looked great. Thickness surprised me, but I also own a Speedy and that thing is thick. I like the idea of just getting it and waiting to see what releases. Simply put, I liked how it looked on my wrist Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I believe this is exactly what I’m feeling. The SD4K is lovely, but it’s not singing to me fully. But the prospect is bothering me. I think I just need a few days to think about it, but it will likely be sold by then. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

As its not fully singing to you maybe best to pass, as you say Sub is a lot cheaper as well, but shouldn't really buy on FOMO as hard as it is.

Get the SD4K! If you don’t, you’ll regret it. And, if by chance you don’t like it, or want the new sub when it comes out, you can always sell the SD4K. The SD4K is the perfect diver. I’d love one, but can’t spend that money right now. I’m afraid once I do have the money they will be going for way over 15 or 16K.

I vote SD4K. It's a better watch than Sub IMO and will hold it's value.

For the new Sub you will probably have more than a decade to decide if or when to get it
no comments on the price of the SD4k, it is one worth to add to the collection no doubt |

One on the wrist is worth more than a release that may or may not happen. You would be buying a discontinued limited run SD. That is the way to go. Should they release a new Submariner there is a chance you will not like it or that the list is so long you wait a long time. Get the SD and then wait, enjoy and see.

Go for it - it’s a classic, and near-perfect diver.

I’d go for the 4K also bro. Damn, imagine if rolex were to change up the submariner to be like the SD4K in sept. Deeper depth rating, thicker case, helium escape, all in the perfect 40mm size...yummmm. But that’s me dreaming.

4K - looks good on you and you can always flip if theres a new sub you like better...
There's no guarantee a new sub will actually be released - they may want to wait until 70th anniversary in 3 years time. Even if they do, there's no guarantee when it will reach stores or how long you will need to wait... |

Personally, don’t think you can compare the two. Very different watches in many ways. I wouldn’t be without my 116600 (had it for over six years whereas nothing else I’ve owned, including a Sub, has lasted more than three years).
But, you do have to love the SD and appreciate what it offers in order to pay the extra cash. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

SD looks good on you. But i prefer the sub due to my smaller wrists. Try to get the SD with red lettering if you can!

The 116600 looks good on your wrist. It's 40mm but thicker than a Sub. Since you're asking for free advice, and you mentioned you could maybe get a new sub from your AD if a new model is indeed released in September, then my choice would be to consider waiting for the new Sub. But the real unknown, is no one has seen this new Sub. It could be that it's the same sub but just more power reserve. Otherwise the 116600 looks good on you and it's an interesting transitional model, 40mm, Ceramic bezel, no cyclops, and only produced three years.

There’s two things that bug me with the SD. 1) the end links and 2) the dial size. The dial looks too big and the bezel too narrow.

SD4k all the way. Great watch that can handle whatever you throw at it.

The end links never bothered me, but after getting my GMTc they were noticeable and I think contributed to the top-heavy aspect of the watch. Overall, it's a great watch, but thick and a little top heavy. I did love the thickness of the crystal and had to adjust to the GMT appearing very flat (optically). Easiest watch I've owned to tell time on (thanks to matte dial and lack of cyclops), but my aging eyes couldn't read the date for squat. |

OP I have the sd4k and it's pretty much the perfect modern Rolex imo. I'm waiting to see what rolex releases sept 1 and even if it's a new sub I still wouldn't let go of the SD4k...maybe. Prices are high right now but you know they'll go higher since this the watch is very niche and had a shot production year. |

SD4K such a classic cool piece. Really love the no cyclops aesthetic as well.
Different watch, but wearing my 16600 today and couldn’t see taking a Submariner over it.

For those that felt it was too heavy, I kinda get it. Here’s a comparison of one of my GMTs and the SD4K. I swear I don’t see a difference. I think I’m gonna go for it. I think it can hold its value really well.
