Should I have just done it?

Popped into a Rolex AD to try on a couple steel sports models that I was considering grabbing from the GM (Kermit and Pepsi). Sales woman was very kind to grab the watches and chat, mentioned they weren’t “taking any additional interest” in the Pepsi but didn’t mention anything about the Kermit. I just said “I understand these things take time, but I just wanted to see it on my wrist”

She responded “Have you thought about the Yachtmaster in white gold?” The answer is no, but I figured I’d try it on anyway. The watch looked awesome and I actually found that I liked it a lot, but I wasn’t prepared to drop over 30k at the drop of a hat. She then said blatantly that “With this, we can start to build a relationship to get you the watches you want”. I hemmed and hawed and she gave me an hour to decide.

On one hand, I felt like I just witnessed a classic high pressure sales technique that I should reject out of hand. The watch was way more than I was looking for, so I shouldn’t get it. However, of all the PM Rolexes I could have been offered, a white gold YM on oyster flex is not the worst.

I ended up passing. Did I screw up? Should I have just bought the damn thing?

An hour to decide? I'd have told her she just lost a customer, and walked out.

It's not?

You did the right thing, the SA was absurd.

So, the SA freely recognized that she was asking you to buy a watch that you didn't want with a non-committal mention of getting you watches you do. Interesting. "Start to build" is pretty open ended for an AD and can mean anything. Hold on to your wallet with this outfit, as far as you are concerned.

Are these YM watches that hard for ADs to sell? Not interested in one, but just curious.

Why do you think it was available to a first time customer. OP did the right thing passing on it.
Only reason to buy it was if u fell in love with it and u had 30k of disposable cash you had nothing better to do with.

You can get an LV on the grey for 15-17K, and you can get the BLRO for about 20-22K so on the low end you spend 35K for 2 watches grey that you want or 30K on a watch you didn’t ask for.
I think you know my opinion on this one.
Good luck

That is a pretty nice watch. She could have forced you to buy something hideous instead.

You can get a BLRO for like 17 . Only the people who bought high still list at 20-22k bc they don’t want to take a bath.

And the Lv is sinking. There’s a few for 15 that have been sitting im sure you can negotiate down

Did the right thing and said thanks but no thanks.

Now, if she offered like 20-30% off MSRP, i might have a second thought.. if the YM looks good and fits well on your wrist.

It’s weird to feel “intimidated” about buying a Rolex, but if you’re a new buyer sometimes it feels this way. But you shouldn’t.

You should take all the time you need to buy a piece, no matter the cost. And PM models are becoming readily available, especially YM.

I would’ve partaked in trying it on and think about it. When she says you have an hour, just politely say thanks you’ll think about it. Share contact info and leave.

I am a big fan of this watch, but you did the right thing. To give an hour to decide to buy any watch, let alone a $30k, unless they literally had someone coming in (which you would never know is true or not) is ridiculous.

This is why people go to the secondary market.

If you wanted the YM you would have probably guaranteed yourself a Pepsi or Kermit in the (relatively) near future. but, unless you loved the WG YM, you made the correct call. Plus, if you were pleasant, you probably at least helped your cause (fwiw).

These retail sales clerks are really getting their rocks off acting as the “gate keeper” of the Rolex brand. Reminds me of a sleazy bouncer standing outside the club deciding who gets inside. Meanwhile the real vip are getting in around the back through the kitchen door.

OP: Just buy through our trusted sellers.

Did you want it? If yes buy it. If no then no. So tired of these AD stories. Can’t wait until they try to sell us a GMT, which will happen sooner than later.

I think you made the right decision in not buying watches you don’t want.

These AD games seem to prevail but will hopefully get less common as the watch market continues to decline…which it will.

I would never consider paying 30k for any watch on a rubber bracelet but I realize that’s a personal preference…

Pass was the right thing…. A lot of AS sales people want to see if you have disposable income. They themselves can’t get a pm at those prices.

The YM42 WG are widely available now so no rush. It’s a nice watch but you have to want it as it’s one you will take a £5k loss on if you quickly decide it’s not for you.

I got offered one yesterday that was on display while visiting the AD.

Should I have just done it?

The Rolex distribution business culture is IMHO heavily sick. I am 35 years active in my watch hobby and last years they killed the fun in general.

A 30k purchase of something that you don't appear to want, in order to maybe get a SS Rolex. Not tempting to me but you should do what you think is best for you.

I’m sure you could have come back 3 hours later and still buy the WG YM.

Misappropriation of timeframe is the #1 communication failure among salespeople. So many better ways to close a reluctant prospect; time pressure is the worst.

There are so many types of SAs at ADs that you just ran into a clumsy one methinks.

The “build the relationship” remark she made convinces me you met a poorly trained SA.
