n00b question re: strap length

when purchasing an aftermarket strap how does one determine the proper length?

for me, its a trial and error thing... some straps have different thickness and it dictates the length difference between straps... 125/75 is the OEM (if i'm correct), and it is fine for dressy type... but if you wanna go casual, then 140/80 may be ok.. mind you that I have small 6.5" wrist, but those sizes above just sit nicely on me....
