When people ask how much your Rolex cost

Just curious how do you respond when someone notices your Rolex and say or ask the following things:

I bet it was expensive
How much did it cost?

How do you respond?

It's not a question I get often. Many years ago (2010 or 2011) it happened when I went out with a female colleague. I'm sure we'll see some interesting replies to this thread.

only to the "working" women in the bar and its something along the lines of "about the same as a BMW" Then wake up the next morning in my hotel without my watch and no memory of what happened the night before. I really have to stop doing that.

I don't mind answering the question honestly.

It is after all a consumer good and anyone can find out the MSRP.

It's not necessary to go into all the details or even provide an exact figure.

I don't think there's any reason to get defensive if someone asks, though.

Best response so far.

Not many people have asked me this, certainly not any strangers.

No one has ever asked me. Granted, I have only owned it for about 2.5 years.

“It’s pennies a day to go first class”

Just that you have to live as long as a Methuselah bristle cone pine to pay for it at that rate.

I have no problem telling someone that I know if I’m asked. All you need is an internet connection and you can find out how much.
It’s amazing what people’s perception is on this. My step son said to me one day, how much was that, about 30K.

Not many people know I wear a rolex (currently 116610). Most people relate rolex to gold datejust.

I have never been asked by a stranger.

A colleague asked once ( great guy, not being a smarta**) and I answered “around 33”

He replied that he would never spend 33 hundred on a watch

Exactly this.

I’ve got just about zero shame in my game. I answer everything honestly. Often times too much so.

When I was younger (late 20's) I got asked often. A friend asking out of curiosity I don't mind but when a stranger would ask I always said. "I have no idea. I won it in a poker game."

Now thirty years later. No one asks.

When and if asked, I sometimes say, 1/2 of the retail price thru a TRF member....
That usually starts the conversation going..

New watch, so no one has noticed yet. And it's been hiding under my long sleeve this whole winter.

you could say," well it depends where you buy it, on Canal street in NYC, about $50, at the Rolex dealer, about 300 times that".

Never been asked, but if it ever happens, I'm raising a pinky to the corner of my mouth and saying, "One Million Dollars!!!"

I just hoist my pinky to the corner of my mouth Dr. Evil style and state "100 Billion dollars" then walk away mumbling about "fricking laserbeams".

The never ask again...
