I don't recall ever being asked that question. I guess it would depend on who asked.

Can’t say that anyone’s ever asked me that question thankfully.

Before I am asked anything, I hold out my arm with a flourish and say, "this is my Rolex, it cost £5700". I find that I am not asked anything after, in fact, no one seems to engage in conversation at all, perhaps a Patek would impress more and be a reason for people to talk to me.

Commenting about someone's watch is one thing, asking about its cost is crass, in my opinion.

I like that approach. I think I'll give it a go.

Someone asked me how much I paid for my YG Sub. I told them I purchased it in France, and let them know the cost in francs.

I was asked one time before my current job. I’ve been asked a dozen times at work. It’s considered an open display of “accomplishments”. The fact that I have more than one garnished some negative comments about my ego from a gent in my leadership.

I wonder what he’ll say when I add a diamond dial DJ to my accumulation.

I don’t get asked often, but this is my response too, easy and generally ends the line of questioning.

But if someone is asking me the cost of my watch, that person isn’t likely to be someone whose opinion matters to me... so maybe I should just be more honest

I have never been asked what something I wear or own costs. It is not a question I have raised either, it is not polite if you ask me.

Oh, and so far one person ever outside of the watch community has noticed that I am wearing a Rolex, she just nodded and smiled.

I've just been asked, is that real? As for price, I know most of my friends think the Subc costs around £2K which they think is horrendous. I don't disabuse them of the idea, nor do I tell them how much my PM pieces cost as I think they'd never buy me a drink again.

Easy way out if you are shy:

"I forgot, not sure"

never been asked about the value of any of my watches, I certainly don't flaunt them, and guys like me don't usually have expensive stuff anyway.

I always lie and say it was a gift or say I’m not sure it’s been years since I bought it.

I often say that “it’s a gift” but add that they can get one for so and so dollars.

The question doesn't bother me IF I know the person well, because they either have one, or are in the market for one. I wouldn't tell a stranger.

Same. That said, I expect most who at least have *some* understanding of the brand know that Rolex is not inexpensive.

If someone asks, that is not being rude, I will tell them what the retail price is and will add that I do not have that much in the watch. The exception is my SD43 which I paid over retail. Usually I get, "how could you pay that much for a watch", my response is how could you not, if you want the best. If the person is rude then I tell them quite a bit and to mind there own business. Either way, it does not change much.
