My uncle gave me a Rolex when I was 11 years old. I had a guy in Paddy's market Sydney grab my arm and hold it up to light. He asked me how much I paid for it, and I told him it was a gift. Needless to say I was terrified he was going to make off with it...

I’ve never been asked, but one Omega wearing physician once asked if it was real which made me laugh. He should have some idea of what I’m making, at least roughly, though I’m sure I actually make a lot more than he thinks.
If I was asked by someone I knew I would tell them. They can google it themselves if they want anyway. I have had a couple people say that I have a great collection and it must be very expensive. To that I replied “probably not as much as you think.”

Repeat a question back to him, or her...

“Why, in the market for one?”

Depends on who is asking. Most of the time 'it's expensive' is enough. The watches I wear are not very blingy, so I don't have that problem.

I have been asked a few times and it makes me uncomfortable. I just say something like "I'm not sure," unless it is someone close to me and then I will answer honestly.

Growing up, I was always taught it was impolite to ask people what things cost? Maybe it's just me, but I don't ask and I don't want to be asked.

Just say the real price you paid for and say I love this watch and save for it for a long time.

My close friends have all asked me a few times. Some because they wanted one as well. Some because they are curious.

My dad has asked me about it as well. Mainly because he was after ad TT Sub. He and I later had a great time shopping for one together.

My normally reply with the MSRP, but explain that pricing is negotiable.

No one has ever asked, and it’s kind of a really weird thing to ask someone. However I would just tell him/her. It’s not like it’s a mystery that can’t be solved with google.

Ive never been asked however if i ever was humility would likely see me defer the question by saying it was a gift or stating i simply cant remember.

Suggesting its more than one could afford or its worth more than your car is as crass as the question itself. Fortunately such ignorance isnt to commonplace in the world be it Rolex owners or otherwise.

The only person who has ever asked me is my wife, who almost immediately said, "Nevermind, I don't want to know."

I’ve been asked by a few colleagues.
I told them how long I needed to work at our hourly rate. I saw one using his calculator moments afterwards ...

For everyone thinking it is rude to ask:

Are you saying it is rude for friends and family to ask or just a stranger?

Is it rude for someone to ask what your car/truck/boat/shoes/grill/lawnmower retails for?

I haven’t chimed in, but, yes; I feel it’s rude to ask anyone what they paid for anything. If I see something I like that a friend has I’ll ask them everything about it EXCEPT for the price. I can always find that answer on the ‘net in ten seconds.

I answer truthfully when asked, which is almost never.

I would never ask that question unless I know the person very well.

This. They ask, I tell, but unless a close friend, this is not an acceptable question.

I cannot recall ever being asked by a stranger. A few friends and family over the years have asked in a curious way. I generally just tell the truth.

My experience is that most people are fairly clueless as to Rolex cost.

I may be weird but it really does not offend me. No different than asking what another item "set me back". Now a stranger asking would be different.

I think it’s rude for someone to ask, unless they are WIS and have truly purchasing intentions/ curiosity.

Been asked once, while wearing a 5513, I just shrugged it off and said “It’s just an old watch I bought for a few hundred dollars”.

A new Rolex or my Rolex may costs 'X' amount of dollars, that's easy explained. What's impossible to even suggest or try to explain is the value some of the vintage pieces plus the value of some of our member's collections.
