Tablet Recommendations?

I'm more a PC bulider. So, tablets and phones aren't my expertise. But, I can use them just fine.

Bought my wife a Samsung Tab A 8.0 about 3-4 years ago. Here's the specs. https://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/ga...0NZBAXAR-specs

It was about $150 at the time. I thought it was a decent price compared to Apple and the other levels of tablets. And for what she uses it for, it is a perfect fit. However it has taken a few spills and the performance has dropped. As well as some battery charging issues.

I want to replace it because it's becoming increasingly frustrating for her, especially with the battery issue. Sometimes it just shuts off.

Prefer to stay with Android because everything else we have is too.

Any suggestions in this performance/price range? Probably go for a protective case this time too!

I would 100% look at Apple, in fact I would even suggest building a hackintosh at some point. Ipad Air 2 is quite fast and should be available at a discount. I've had a few android from entry level to top of the line and a few ipads, the ipads are much better. ASUS has some good android tablets if you want to stay android. I've heard some good stuff about microsoft surface as well.

Look at Best Buy for open box deal on Samsung tablets. You can usually get the best deals in your price range. Talking specs isn’t going to help a lot for 150 or so... To get faster speeds and screen resolution you will be in the 300 range. Stay away from Amazon fire tablets, they are nice but more of a limited ecosystem. Best Buy also has their insignia house brand. Less money, but slightly less performance.

I love my iPad Air 2. I’ve had it for a couple years now and I use it more than I use my computer by far.

For the record, my wife and I both have Android phones. You don’t need to stick with any particular brand or operating system for these things.

The only tablets worth looking at are Apple.

I am an Apple user since 1976. Lately I’ve been using a 12.9 inch iPad Pro. It functions as well or better than any computer that I found . Well worth the investment. The display is beautiful, the processor fast and plenty of storage.

For general computing tasks they are indeed hard to beat. But if you need strength for editing or gaming or other demanding tasks they are far too weak.

That’s what I have and love it! Have the smart keyboard to go with it which I also recommend.

Just picked up the iPad Pro 10.5. Amazing screen. Pencil is very nice for notes and photo editing. Considering the amount of use it will get I consider it a bargain.

The increased screen size was a welcomed improvement that is a lot easier on my aging eyes as well.

iPad Pro 12.9 at home & an iPad mini for trackside work.

The Apple Pencil wasn’t worth the price but the keyboard/cover was.

It’s semi-fast but that’s compared to a MacBook Pro.

Can't beat iPads, most specially on the long term with the iOS updates and the entire ecosystems. Best apps, best accessories.

iPad Pro 10.5 is a solid choice, a great do it all.

I’ve owned many iPads and Android tablets. For low cost basic tablet operations, an Android is ok, but for any “real” use, iPad is definitely the way to go. Especially if you’re already a Mac user. If you’re not a Mac user, well, it may make more sense to use the Android platform.

Android and PC user here.

I left iPhones 4-5 years ago and since I play PC games, I'm a builder like you.

I would never consider an android tablet even though I will only use android on my phone.

Just a grab the standard current iPad. I think it's $330, but goes on sale fairly regularly for $250. That's how much I picked mine up for.

All I really do with it is browse the internet, read forums, and play the occasional game. It's perfect for that and for $250, it's great.

I’ve had a couple of Android base tablets, and they were functionally fine. Before Christmas I went with an iPad due to iPhone compatibility/interface for work .......... wow what a difference ! Their system is more compatible with apps, web sites, forums, email systems, etc ........

IMO

Scored a 2017 model Ipad 9.7" 32GB for $250. Not bad. All set up and way better than the old tablet she was using!

128GB was $350, but I don't think she'll need it. But, yeah not bad either. Glad the shopping is over. The Samsung was really having problems. Took one too many falls. Was even starting to come apart!

If you need the ability to download/upload or manipulate files or any of the proprietary software you work with is PC based the Microsoft Surface Pro is the way to go.
