Your thoughts on the SS YM2

Hello Everyone!
What do you guys think of the SS YM2 ? My brother wanna get it as his first Rolex! He does like big watches like Breitling, I saw it today at the boutique and it's way much better looking than pictures, but I honestly can't justify the price!!! you can almost get two watches instead!
Is it worth it?
Thank you so much and I hope you're having a great weekend!
Cheers,

I love it. Heavy. Big at 44mm. Kind of a weekend watch. Unusual with great presence. Older blue hands version better. Can be found BNIB at around 14k.

Only negative is cluttered dial. Tough to easily read at times.

I have it and love it.

Have had it now for over 2 years. Wearing my SD43 more lately, but that's because it's my new toy.

If I can impart some advice, I would suggest you try and buy it on the second hand market or grey market. You can save yourself about $2000 or a little more.

i dont get the appeal personally, but it does have its following. Im glad they make it for variety though, as a world full of subs and GMT's would be pretty boring.

It's my favourite Rolex (see my avatar) for these reasons:-

- it's bigger than your usual 40mm watch but not overly heavy (like the Deepsea);

- the combination of colours (blue, white and red) is striking to me;

- you don't see it in the wild as often as Subs, Datejusts and GMTs;

- because it's not popular, you can get a discount if you buy new and I'm sure secondhand prices are also attractive;

- it has a unique movement.

As above, I always thought it was a poorly designed watch and not legible. It's a great choice and I'm glad I added it to my collection.

Great watch with a ton of wrist presence and pops like no other Rolex I own. Along with the D-Blue they make for the perfect weekend watches. A lot of fun wearing it and such nice change up from my other Rolex. The watch is expensive but research the complexity of Caliber 4161 movement and you will understand why.

PS Got the first version a few years ago then added the newer version recently and prefer it. The watch is cleaner without the blue surrounds and the new hands cleaner as well and more "Rolex" being Mercedes style. Both nice but the new for this one just works perfectly IMHO.

I love mine. As mentioned earlier in the thread, the older models hands are a lot more legible than mine. The only real irritating thing with the watch for me is the lack of date.

It’s a great looking watch. Wears extremely well for a big watch. I really enjoyed mine when I owned it, but it’s an expensive piece, and I found the complication to be completely useless for me.

I'd wear that watch on a yacht or behind the wheel of a '59 Cadillac, but I don't own either so it's not on my personal wishlist for now.

Your thoughts on the SS YM2

Recent purchase. It’s a great weekend watch but I sneak it out more than that. I have the gen 1 with the blued hands. They have more contrast and are less washed out on the dial making it easier to read for me. The timer is good for yacht racing and steaks 🥩 I am sure the movement and the “command bezel” up the price.
This is the blue that should be on the GMT insert.

This is my opinion as well. It’s a strikingly beautiful watch. So unique. Fits like a glove. But I have absolutely no need for the complication since I’m still shopping for yachts (haha I wish). My head also spins trying to read the time. Maybe one day when I’m sailing on my yacht I won’t actually care what time it is... then I’m all over one of those bad boys.

If he likes Breitling, then this is a good choice Rolex for him. There is no subtlety in the watch - it literally flaunts its name on the dial.

I think it is a cool looking watch, but not for me. Price is a bit much for a SS Rolex.

It's a really cool watch. I have considered buying it from time to time. But the complication is not something that I'd ever use and I'm probably too much of a purist in that regard. I have a medium sized wrist and tried one on last week - it fit better and was actually lighter than I was expecting.

I think it is a nice watch. I tried one on at an AD and I felt that it was far too thick for me personally.

Pro's:

-One of the best looking modern watches, IMO. If you're after something a little different than the sea of subs/GMT's out there, then look no further. Like Ken said, a fantastic weekend watch.

-Movement: Yes...a lot of people are going to say the regatta function is useless. However, it's based on the rock solid 4130 movement of the Daytona, which is one of, if not the best chronograph movements out there. Amazing accuracy and power reserve of 72 hours, plus the ability to time your steaks on the grill. And...how many Daytona owners use the tachymeter scale on the bezel?

Cons:

-I never could get the bracelet to fit quite right, and tried every combination known to man, b/c I liked the watch so much. I even bought a 1/2 link and tried that, and was still between sizes. So, I'm going to say it really needs a glide lock clasp, IMO. Especially in the PM versions. It would help balance the enormous head and make getting the perfect fit (which is so important to a watch of this size) actually achievable.

-New hands. When all the brainchilds of Rolex had a chance to tweak this watch to make it something really special, they decided to make a cosmetic change with changing the hands, which really don't work, IMO. As opposed to adding a glide lock clasp, which would have a home run.

Just my two cents.
