Anyone familiar with the numerous AD’s that are in the Recolata vicinity of Buenos Aires?

A nice place, expect no discounts. Also, be aware of your surroundings. Patio Bullrich is a nice shopping mall and close to probably the BEST cheese bar I have ever been to (Park Hyatt Palacio Duhau on Av Alvear. Sit at the bar, ask for a nice Malbec and for the cheese menu....you will be SHOCKED. Enjoy!)

Been warned by many to watch surroundings. Staying at the Alvear Palace. Wondering if sourcing issues are the same there as elsewhere. |

Sorry to hear. I guess jewelry and watches stays in safe at hotel until we eventually board cruise ship a few days later. |

I guess based on what has been said here and what I have heard elsewhere, the idea of even walking into an AD there can’t be a good one.
I can just imagine them casing out who goes in empty handed and comes out with a bag. |

Its not that dramatic. You can walk into an AD lol. Just don’t walk around the city wearing your watch. Some people do, but don’t do it. Enjoy.

Would you guys bring in dollars to 'cambio' for the black market exchange rate? Then buy watches in peso? It'll be a lot cheaper, if you know what I'm saying. I remember they used to have an Omega boutique at the airport, prices were in Peso's.

no more "dolar blue" anymore. Those days are over. There is only one exchange rate now, the official one. The reason there was two in the past is because locals were only allowed to buy a certain amount of USD per month

I would not wear my Rolex in Argentina. Would probably avoid making deals down there too. Bad economy, flashy watch = easy target for being mugged. Plenty of stories from friends who live there.

I plan to leave it in the hotel safe. Only on my own for two days. After that, on a 14 night cruise.

I was in Buenos Aires about 4 months ago. Checked out a couple of ADs and there was basically nothing of interest. It’s cliche and every large citiy has its good and bad areas. I have traveled to Argentina and Buenos Aires specifically 8 or 10 times in the last 3 years. Each subsequent visit I see more closed storefronts and read local newspaper or watch local television ( I speak Spanish) and without a doubt street crime has increased. Enjoy it but don’t flaunt any luxury goods, especially jewelry or watches.

I used to work for a PE firm that had an office in BA. Things got so bad that the firm purchased a couple of armored SUVs for our partners/investors.
I was scheduled to go down to work on one of the funds, but about a week before my trip I was told the office was closing because of all the corruption (hard to make/keep deals) and overall crime the employees were dealing with. I would still like to visit, but it sounds like you can't bring anything of value. |

I wore an Omega Planet Ocean and didn't have any issues...deliberately didn't wear a Rolex though as I thought it might stand out too much. Use a credit card without FX fees and enjoy the cheap food/drinks! Shoot me a PM if you're looking for any recommendations or have questions. |
