Last summer when I was visiting Seattle, a Ben Bridge AD had a BLNR, LVc, SubND, Sub LN, etc.... couple months later, you can barely find a SS model

Late 1990's early 2000's it was very hard to find a SS Submariner and SS Daytona was impossible to get from AD's. I did find an A serial number Sub at an obscure AD in 2000 just by chance and it was the only one they had so I purchased it with no discount and I felt lucky to get it.

I remember in the 1990s looking at GMT IIs and Subs and salesmen offering discounts left and right. That was always the case until recently.

Now, salesmen don't even seem to want to talk anymore.

My usual shopping/browsing strategy is to just wander in and look at what they have in the display case - DJ, DD, whatever. I never ask if they have a black ceramic Daytona or new Pepsi in the back. The most I get at Geary's is "let us know if you want to see anything." At Ben Bridge, I don't even get that. I guess at BB, they are too busy selling ear rings and Bulovas to mind their Rolex case.

Yep - in the late 90’s getting a 116520/16520 was really a challenge. It took longer to get my 116520 than it did to get my 116500!

I'm not sure. Rolex is Audi or Mercedes-AMG at best. Unless Rolex is ready to come out swinging with a hi-grade caliber and a truly bespoke new design, I very much doubt Rolex can move upmarket and compete with AP-PP-VC in that segment.

I can't help but remember how badly the first Mercedes-Maybach (which was just a glorified W140 S-Class) performed against the RR Phantom. Rolex would suffer the same fate if they move upmarket with its existing line-up with more bling and charge higher prices.

I would agree. I think they’ve been planning production accordingly.
