Panerai models

Greetings.

I am in the market to purchase a Panerai. I have briefly read about them but would like some info from the watch pros.

I like the case back where you can see the movement. I also like a date function.

Please advise!

Yup. The website's search engine is very good, but it will give you mostly models that are currently in production.

now the 1312, you can find a preowned 312 pretty easily

First you need to decide which primary line you prefer: Radiomir, Luminor, or Sub. I currently have a Luminor but I've also owned and enjoyed a Radiomir and Sub. All 3 watches wear vastly different in size but all fit me very well and I really liked all them. I even bought my wife a Luminor for Christmas that she doesn't know about but I'm hopeful she'll enjoy very much.

The next decision is whether or not you want an automatic or a manual movement.
My current Pam is the 423. Even though its large (47mm) it fits me perfectly; its steel which I recommend; it has a second hand which is a must for me, along with the power reserve indicator on the dial which I also like because it's manual wind. A lot people believe the 423 dial is too busy but I believe it makes the watch appear smaller. For example, when I bought the 423 I compared it to a 372 which is a very popular model with the traditional dial that has only the hour and minute hand. Neither of these watches has the date function but I'm hopeful this will help your thought process.

One last thing, I've had a lot of watches over the years and I will not buy a watch unless I've actually seen and tried the model on first. In addition to the appearance, I've learned that I like wearing watches with straps and pin buckles. I just find metal bracelets and deployments to be very uncomfortable.

I live in southern California so I am going to head to South coast plaza to try a few on before I buy.

I like the luminor style.

I like the 1312 and 312. How much different are those 2 pieces?

For those criteria (manual, date, crown guard), your only "reasonable" option is the 233. Beyond that, you're looking mostly at PM or EOT if you want all 3.

514 could work if you give up the Luminor case for a 1940 Rad. 346 or 735 if a Radimior.

1312/312 are automatics, FYI.

Panerai boutique wouldn't give me a deal. The offered to throw in a brown strap,however I have been speaking with someone on watchuseek and he had a BNIB with papers for 6300. Might scoop that up.

Try the 312 also. It'a the predecessor of the 1312; slightly taller and the second hand is the same colour as the hour and minute hand.

If that's the style you're set on, take a look at the 359 or 1359 too. Very similar except the 359 has a a full Arabic dial and ecru lume. Probably my favourite PAM.

Given you're in the US, might be worth contacting one of the TRF trusted sellers too.
