Patek Nautilus 5711 or ALS Lange 1?

Hi all,

Am considering the above two for my grail piece to aspire to. Was previously considering the AP RO Jumbo but excluded it after trying it on, as the lugs were Po stiff preventing a good fit for my small wrist.

It's down to these two now, your thoughts on both pieces?

The Lange probably has the edge in exclusivity and movement finishing. But being a relatively new house starting in 1992, it probably loses out in terms of heritage and prestige.

On the other hand the Nautilus is the current hot seller in the patek line and is probably stronger in terms of resale value. However one may argue that it loses to the calatrava and the complications in terms of representing the Patek line, and is not that original in design coming after the Royal Oak. Furthermore already having a 5119 in the stable, one wonders if it is even a step up or sideways so to speak.

Both look wonderful on the wrist and I'm flipping back and forth, even if I won't be buying in the near future.

Your thoughts please?

Have a good weekend all..

Lange 1

Usually I would choose for the Patek but the 2 you are comparing are imo not in the same league.

Ask me to choose between a gold patek annual calendar of the Lange , I would take the Patek.
But a 5711 or a Lange 1 ... give me the Lange please

I think a couple questions need to be addressed. Which 5711 are you looking at? SS or gold? Are you looking for a sports watch or a dress watch?

I'm looking at the 5711 in SS, on a bracelet..

As for whether I'm looking for a sports or dress watch, either is fine. I have other watches in the rotation (like a PP 5119) which covers dress, as well as some (like a ROO or PAM) which covers sport. Obviously versatility is an advantage, which tips in the Nautilus' favour, but I must say I've seen the Lange worn with shorts and it looks nice as well!

Given you response to the questions I asked, I agree with the answer that Unknown gave.
The ss 5711 is a great looking, multi purpose sports watch, IMO. Perhaps a better way to say it would be that it's a sporty looking watch.
The Lange one is a multi purpose dress watch. Either can be worn with just about any attire, but that's how I'd generally classify them.

I'd go with the Lange one personnally, but that's based on my current collection, not yours. There really is no wrong answer here.

Keep us apprised on your decision.

My vote would be for the Lange 1 ESPECIALLY IF it's the moonphase in RG.

Either way so cannot go wrong and you are fortunate to have such a decision.

I wouldn't even be considering model history of both. Heritage and prestige is synonymous with the brands in these cases. Go for the one that speaks to you the most aesthetically.

Hard choice.

I actually had my eyes on both watches when chosing my 5711. However I always knew I would get the Patek first. It was easy for me, because my aspirations to own a Patek were very strong, and I have found I actually prefered SS sports watches on bracelets more than I do dressier watches on straps. Besides I have a Patek AD, I don't have a Lange AD near me. All factors considered, I really didn't have to think about it too hard, because like I said my aspirations were to always own a Patek. I think the Lange your talking about is a great timepiece, but I know the PP5711 does it for me.

For you however, your thought process and reasons may be entirely different. What time piece does it for you? Which one brings a smile to your face, or which one fits your lifestyle more? Do you aspire to own one brand more than another? Does any of this really matter or are there other factors?

Lange by a country mile.

Maybe they didn't make watches in the 70's but you're not wearing it in the 70's, you're wearing it today, and today that's the better choice!

What about the 5146?

Thank you for your opinions so far.. Seems like its pretty even with the Lange perhaps edging it a little..

Was looking around both in ADs and in the forums and have been taken by a 5146 as well..

To perhaps even up the playing field a little, what would you guys now say if I'm considering the Lange 1 vs the Patek 5146? Both dress watches in precious metal, pricing roughly similar.. Of course the 5711 is still in contention too...

Lange 100000%!!!

Only thing the Naut has going for it is the name, I think it is an ugly watch. The Lange is stunning!

Both are great finely finished pieces. Having owned the 5711 in the past, I believe the Lange 1 will keep you stimulated longer. So my vote is lange. Cheers.

nautilus for the long and short term.

better resale and more traditional dial.

PP is way more legible, which is one of the qualities in a watch that i hold in high priority
