What was the inspiration for your watch?

Although I'm not a Rolex owner yet, the inspiration for my Seamaster 2220.80, was seeing it in Casino Royale back in 2006. Two and half years of saving up and it was on my wrist. Still there today.

If you ever had an inspiration for any of your watches, I'd love to hear what it was.

Was on my bicycle as a kid had a Seiko Diver on, a Range Rover pulled up next to me, the guy had his hand on the gearknob and I saw a bluesy, said to myself I am getting one of those, did about 20 years later.

My best friends dad had a 16613 blue when I was growing up. He would put it on the kitchen counter when he went to sleep and I remember being so intimidated yet awestruck by it I wanted one since the first time I saw it. It took all of my courage as a boy to barely touch it with a finger. Now 24 yrs later and I’ve got one on my wrist.

Two very polar opposite sources of inspiration:
-My grandfather always wanted a Rolex, gifted one around age 85 or so, TT DJ Champagne. It was his grail and then became what I wanted. Growing up I wanted to get a matching set for my wife on our wedding. It didn’t happen on the day but we did a few years later. Think of both my wife and my grandfather when I wear it. His respect for time and punctuality was a big reason I got into watches.

- 2pac wearing a DD on the All Eyez on Me album cover. To me that signified when you make it, you don’t need to apologize and you can wear a Rolex in any situation.

Submariners and my inspirations were Jacques Cousteau and his lead diver Falco, COMEX, military units who used them MilSubs and of course Bond.

Love reading about these indelible impressions. Thanks for sharing.

Once i get my first Rolex I'll include its inspiration in my incoming.

My Dad wore a Rolex Oyster Perpetual or Tudor Oyster Elegante most of the time. As a child, they were always THE watches. When I started looking at watches in shop windows it was only ever Rolex and Tudor that appealed to me. Others seemed somehow lacking. They lacked the rounded case, the integrated bracelet, the waterproofing or the durability.

It was the Submariner I liked most. I loved everything about it from as far back as I can remember. Legibility, robustness, bracelet, and the bezel. It was all perfect. It took me a long time to save for mine, but I got it! I remember Dad remarking how Rolex prices had “shot up” and were harder to justify, but grinning when I bought my Submariner home.

Dad was an airline pilot (from the 50’s to the 90’s) and an awful lot of his friends wore Rolex’s too. Oyster Perpetuals, Datejusts, Turn-o-graphs, Air Kings (originals), Submariners, GMT’s, Explorer’s etc, and all of them were happy talking about them to an inquisitive child. One of Dad’s friends was a BAC test and development pilot and had a GMT presented to him by Rolex, as he had been part of the Concorde team. I remember him explaining how it worked, but I wish I’d asked him more about Concorde.

Dad’s other watches (IWC Mk 11 and Smiths) were probably an inspiration for me too, as I really got in to military watches before ending up with an Explorer as well - the last of the 36mm’s, and the best of both worlds in my opinion!

My only regret is that I never bought a GMT before they switched to the ceramic. Perhaps the moral of the story is that one seldom regrets things bought, but only missed opportunities! The old adage that you remember quality after you have forgotten the price is absolutely true.

When I moved to Milan for grad school in 2014, I walked around the Gallerie Vittorio Emanuelle.

Had zero clue about watches during those days - but I remember seeing a Tudor window display at an AD. Coincidentally - my first name is Tudor.

I laughed it off. Told myself one day I'd buy one (the BBR). Fast forward 3 years and I got one. In the meantime - I started reading much much more about Tudors (and watches in general)

Beautiful hobby.

Mine isn't related to people or events, just that I've always been entranced/tickled by design and always loved pocket watches as a kid.

But this basic design always seemed so perfect and pure to me. As an adult I've always had watches that moved up the scale with my income, maybe to about 50 of them. Now down to 10.

When the Peter Speake-Marin Piccadilly with an enamel dial came out in 2003 it took me back to the way I felt about watches when I was a kid and I fell in love with it. And bought one a couple of years ago.

I have Rolex, UN, Cartier, GP, Omega, Parmigiani and Corum and love them, but the elegant simplicity of this type of dial on this Speake-Marin design really checks all my boxes.

Casino Royale and the 2220.80 got me also. I got mine towards the end of production right before they released the new ceramic model.

I never noticed that on the album cover! I had to go dig up my old CD to check it out.

I believe it was 36mm DD with diamond bezel, markers. He had a custom bracelet to mimic President band on the other hand.

According to the internet there is a receipt he paid 20k cash for it but no trace of the watch. Kinda fitting for him. If it ever comes up for an auction somewhere, I will liquidate assets to bid accordingly lol.

Inspiration? I need to spend money!

I don't drink (much), I don't do drugs, I am not a sugar daddy, I don't have a big car collection, I don't gamble (ok, stock market is basically gambling, but that's another story, LOL).

What am I supposed to do with my money? Just sit here and watch my wife and kids spend them all?

NO WAY! BUY WATCHES! haha

My Dad had a submariner w/ date. He passed away and my brother got the watch.
But I have no real sibling rivalry w/ him. ( Honest ! ) LOL
It's strange though - I rarely saw Dad wear it.
He didn't want to show off too much I suppose ?
Really miss that guy.
