I work at the University and I see more watches than "smart watches" on students so I'd guess there will still be a desire for a quality timeless machine that let's you know how long till you can go home and have a beer!

Any Mk1, especially tool watches, transition watches or watches which weren’t produced for a long time or/and watches that brought new technologies/patents should do well in the future. But we are usually taking at least 15-20 years.

The kids that are 5 years old are the generation that will be the end of 40-60% of mechanical watch manufacturing.

Probably the wisest thing I've ever seen here. Especially in the context of extremely high quality but still mass-produced Rolex watches.

+1.

SS Daytona with steel bezel post Zenith movement should be a safe bet. They are good and nice looking watches, instantly recognizable..

Subs, GMT's, and Daytona's will always be in style, will always be the 3 most popular sport models, and thus always collectible.

Any 4 or 5 digit SS model of those 3 will rise in value over time without a doubt, and the same will apply to the PM models in excellent condition but at a lesser rate.

Avoid anything TT.

I struggle to any merit in the Cellini range. As a collector of 40's - 50's dress watches (incl. Rolex) I find the vintage examples much more appealing. Cellini offers nothing to me.

Yes .....but probably 2-3years ago surely......now they’ve doubled in that time
The trick is predicting the next trend..........Explorer 2’s......still relatively affordable.......Tudors too, they are the price Rolex sport models were 5 years ago and a great looking range........
Whatever you choose it’s important to like it so if you’ve predicted wrong at least you get to enjoy it

I've only been collecting a few years, and have more often than not paid a premium (for the time) on quality watches, and found that very quickly the market prices would catch up.
I am a believer than any beautiful sport model 4 digit reference (from a basic 1680 white, to a vintage daytona, BC sub, etc) in exceptional condition will always be good value.

The same way I am at awe at seeing phenomenal condition, which sets my watch apart from other examples of the same reference, the next guy hunting for that reference can easily justify a premium for the quality, and for that same feeling.

i would guess 5 digit datejusts and day dates will probably rise in value. maybe oysterquartz i guess. each decade has its streak. also, whatever is really hot right now probably wont be as good of value over next few years as opposed to whats hot next (obv). i guess look at whats going for less now and try to see if you're into it, and maybe you'll strike.

As prices rise the 1600s will be seen as more attractive to some buyers, you're getting the exact same Rolex movement as much more expensive watches.

Probably won't go wrong with classic sports models. Get a good condition Sub 5513/5512 and a GMT 1675. Throw in a Milgauss 1019 and a couple of nice 1803s, and that's your kids' college fund right there. :-)

From my experience, any top condition vintage Rolex is a good investment. You get to enjoy the condition too.

Buy well and buy 'em all.
Agree with Springer on the 16710

1803s and 18038s, especially those with interesting dials. People have touted them as the next big thing for a while and they haven't really moved, but their time is soon!

Stellas have been super hot for years. Lately interest have gone down somewhat as it is literally impossible to spot a refinished dial for a genuine stella. Also they aren’t as rare as many thought.

Another weak spot for day-dates are Middle East dials such as khanjar and qaboos. Many lose dials have been floating around the market and watches not marked as special orders are cold.

Still expensive but many collectors avoid them.

I never understood the middle east dials if one were not in someway affiliated with that middle east country...

I think the 'best vintage investment' is something that is full kit with papers and as original as possible, after that, it certainly seems the older (4 digit) sports models, followed by the 5 digit sports models seem to just keep going up. I think we will soon see a "holes" versus "no holes" cases be the indicator of "fresh vintage" to "modern"; the no holes, rolex rehaut and incised crown add a 21st century dynamic to the watch and it will be interesting to see in 10 years how the market will respond to a 1995 16710 to a 2005 16710.
