Every watch has a story...(wifey's first Rolex)
Hey fellow TRFers, wanted to share a story about the latest watch in our household. I've always felt a little guilty having a small watch collection while my wife doesn't have one...although she has other jewelry. Although she's a petite woman (5-feet / ~100lbs), she likes mens sizes (36-40mm) and will periodically ask if she can "borrow" one of mine. I have politely declined 100% of the time, :)
But any time I ask her if she wants me to find her a watch, she would say she shouldn't wear one since she's with the kids (two toddlers) every day and it will get banged up. But for fun, I had her browse through dozens (if not hundreds) of watches to see which one she likes. This was strictly based on visual attraction alone since there were no prices and I didn't tell her which ones are rare, too expensive, etc....she's known to have not only good taste but also very particular tastes. While perusing the pictures of watches, she pointed out a vintage Day-Date in YG with a black dial and said, "I like this but without the day at the top". So then I showed her a picture of a Datejust to which she said "yeah, like this but in yellow gold". So then I showed her a picture of a yellow gold Datejust w/ champagne dial to which she said "yes, but with a BLACK dial". SIGH. Gold Datejusts are relatively hard to come by...and a black dial version even more so; especially if you're going to want one in good to great condition. But, now I knew what she liked. To make a long story longer, I decided to get her a watch as a thank you gift. A thank you for being the Super Mom/Wife that she is and especially this year where I've had to travel ~3 weeks/month for my work. She has never complained and continues to be super supportive of my watch hobby, my career, my boys' nights/trips (and there are plenty), etc. I didn't know how long it would take me to find one in the condition I would want to get for my wife's first Rolex...but soon after I had made up my mind, WBAW (WannaBuyAWatch) had one. And not only was it the exact configuration (ie. YG + black dial + jubilee), it was in great condition AND it was her birth year! So I emailed Ken (owner) and as I expected, he was fantastic. Super sweet guy and extremely responsive/cordial. Even after a little negotiation, the watch was a bit out of my initially desired budget but I decided this was meant to be so pulled the trigger. That was nearly 3 months ago and I was finally able to give her the watch last night at a previously scheduled yearly dinner we have. She was floored and I was extremely happy, :) Here's her first wristshot, thanks for reading!

Nice. Donated mine since I can’t wear watch and bracelet at the same time. Scratches too easily.

Totally understand. Me too actually...but I want her to be comfortable so told her to wear it however she'd like. I may be circling back here in a year showing off the "battle scars", :)

What a cool story. Funny how you have to find what they want by emininating what they don’t. Glad she likes it and I am sure it is even more special because it came from you.
