Rolex Advertisement: super trivia...Submariner in Mt. Everest ad.

One of the earliest, if not the inaugural J. Walter Thompson Rolex advertising campaign for the American Rolex Watch Company was the "If you were...racing, flying, climbing etc." advertising campaign launched in 1967. Rolex forum members will notice the example advertisement in the January, 1967 JWT newsletter is unlikely to be a real advertisement as the advertisement refers to John Hunt's Explorer and pictured is a 5513 (I think) Submariner...

...Rolex forum members will further notice the picture in the sample advertisement in the JWT newsletter is from the 1965-1966 Royal Navy Rolex Submariner advertisement.

That second Submariner advertisement is my all-time favorite. I’m always reminded of Connery as Bond. He certainly made wearing the Sub with a tux not only stylish but cool. Way ahead of his time! Thanks again OP

Per a request here is an enlarged picture of the other part of the JWT newsletter regarding the 1967 Rolex "If you were...racing, flying, climbing etc." campaign...

In the 1985 JWT publication The Rolex Oyster: 39 years of advertising history the 1967 "If you were racing, flying, climbing etc." campaign is remembered...the yellow-highlighted text follows...

A further aspect of our current Rolex Oyster campaign---the association with prestigious sporting events---makes a single appearance in 1965 in the form of the Australian Admiral's Cup (22). The helmsmen, it reads, "navigated with the aid of the Rolex Submariner". Once again the idea does not seem to have been followed up at the time.

The campaign to dominate the 1960s, however, was the "If you were" campaign, "If you were climbing here tomorrow you'd wear a Rolex" (23) was accompanied by "If you were negotiating here..." (Geneva's Palais de Nations); "If you were sailing alone around Cape Horn..." (Sir Francis Chichester); "If you were speaking here..." (The UN building in New York); "If you were diving here", "piloting a jet here", "skiing here", "exploring here" and many more. The idea was highly campaignable and we certainly proved it. It also contained all the elements of the current campaign: famous names, dangerous enterprises, prestigious events.

This is great. Exactly what TRF is all all about. But can we skip all these useful, historical and great posts to talk about stickers to put on tool watches?

Just think... in 40 years someone will post an old screenshot of some long retired Tik Tokker flexing his or her Bubble OP with the thread titled Throwback Rolex Marketing.
