I am surprised these are not discussed that often. I think the new generation look phenomenal!

Unfortunately I have never seen them in person as with all Rolex models they are perpetually out of stock, but I am keen on buying a WG Cellini Date.

What are your thoughts on these? If you have one pics please!

I got one from my local AD I have a great relationship with for a mate of mine (RG Date), I liked it for sure, although when I compared it to my JLC MUT Moonphase, I am sad to say it felt the poorer cousin as I really am a Rolex guy and wanted to like it more. For sure it was a stunning piece, but the level of finish and the open back on the JLC, IMHO is better.

I love the Cellini line, especially the moon phase and I'm lucky to have handled and tried it on several times. The only thing holding me back is the price tag.

I absolutely Love the RG moon phase! I just know I’d admire it more than wear it. The DD line fits my style a bit better:)

Kidding. I'll be the first to say I've said for years I'm a bracelet guy through and through and while it's a nice watch, it just wasn't for me. Too dressy. Well, you know what, it's a phenomenal watch...my favorite is the moon phase, although they're all great.

Now, the moon phase...wow, just wow. That one stole my heart the moment I made the mistake of trying it on. That is definitely a watch I could see in the box at some point. And just maybe....that point will be sooner than later.

Some of the ideas expressed in the Cellini models seem to be designed for a very narrow slice of the broader Rolex aficionadi.

They are more delicate timepieces than the Oyster line. Specialized towards the dress watch segment, Cellini is the “white tie and tails” of the marque.

As for being loved - they are by owners - but widely misunderstood or under-appreciated by the million+ Rolex Oyster buyers globally.

I’m a big fan and I think they are great value...but...for me, Rolex is not where I’d go for a dress watch. Rolex are the world leaders in good quality, classic design. durable sports watches in my view, at a truly competitive price...but for a dress watch I either don’t pay much and go Longjnes, or a pay Cellini price and go JLC or VC.

I like them. Just can’t justify the watch to myself as I’d probably only wear it a handful of occasions in my lifetime.

I have seen several versions in the metal and tried them on - beautiful watches - as one would expect from Rolex. I was told the movement is the same as that used in the Explorer by the AD (not sure if it's true) to make them a more "robust" than a typical "dress watch". That said - IMO - Rolex's strong suit is more in the professional and sports watch arena. Not that I wouldn't by Cellini if so moved to do so, but in that price range there are lots of options. The other thing is, based on the movement, the Cellini is "thick" for a dress watch.

Competition.

Rolex sports watches have little in the way of direct competition. Patek and AP's equivalent watches might be better finished and more exclusive, but they're also more expensive. Omega and Breitling may produce watches that are in the same ball-park quality wise, but they don't carry the same cachet. So if you want something that looks and feels like a Rolex sports watch, you have to buy a Rolex.

The Cellini on the other hand faces competition from storied watch brands who made their reputations on the back of making great dress watches - e.g the JLC Master Ultra Thin Moon (my favourite in this category), entry level Patek Calatrava's and ALS' 1815 to name but three. The Cellini doesn't stand out from that kind of crowd.

I’m always interested in great watches, but the Cellini line, and any other pure dress watch for that matter, is out of the question for me. I spend 4-5 hours oudoors on a daily basis and wear suits probably 0,1 % of my time. That’s about 1 day in 3 years. Therefore, these leather-strapped pieces of art are not for me.

I’d buy one immediately if the case were smaller and thinner, and if the dial were plain. As it is I find it too big and tall, and gaudy.
