Hey photo experts

I went to Williamstown a few days ago and tried shooting some night scenes of the bay with the city in the background.. oh and a few boats too. I only had the kit lens on me so zoom not sooo great... anyone that knows this spot can vouch how far the city is from where I was standing...

Now the boats are a bit blurry due to the long shutter time... thats cool I get that.

Now the bit I'm not sure about is the large rings around the lights... is this a lens flare/dirty lens issue or to do with the exposure? The rings were visible regardless of what I shot and at what exposure... I've never had them appear this bad before - lens???

I've been practising for my HK trip on March 3rd.. gotta get some good Hong Kong Habour shots in!!!!

Hey Amanda...that's a flare...usually caused by one or more of lower end lens/glass, no lens hood, lens filter, etc. You can read some more about it here...

Nice shot...you can easily clean out the flare in Photoshop or the like if you want. I'd say straighten the horizon, up the exposure slightly with a curve and sharpen. Happy to take a pass at it for you if you'd like. Just let me know...

They are very nice and I actually don't mind the flare that much.....gives it an artsy sort of look.

I kinda like the flares myself.
But like Charles said, 5 minutes in Photoshop can get rid of them if you want to.

hmm... interesting shots amanda, I like them! Especially the one with the tilted boat.
I wouldn't worry about the flares too much, but as patrick said try sticking a UV filter on your lens. Also, try doing a few spot-metered off the water shots, you will need a tripod as it's going to be an 4-8 second exposure, but you'd be amazed at how much colour there is in the world at night.

Thaks for all the comments guys.... to answer the questions/comments

I posted them exactly as they came out of the camera, knew the horizon was slopey but didnt bother fixing it! Call it lazy ...

No, no UV filter. Had a lens hood (but at night that wouldnt make any difference would it?) on and had the camera mounted on a Tripod...

These exposures were long.. most of them were 10+ seconds.. maybe a bit too long?

I really need to get my screen calibrated.. I'm looking at them at work now and they look totally different than at home. The second shot especially looks darker than I remembered it!

I am thinking of getting a Macbook when my current PC lease expires... given I only surf the net and am more interested in the photo stuff.. a Mac would probably be better for me. I dont play PC games or use PC specific software

Here's another one

For night time shot's such as yours, you would do very well with a manual camera on a tripod, with a UV lens filter. A Leica rangefinder would make that look crystal clear. You would have to set your on shutter speed, F/stop, and focus.

Yep I used a Canon 350D on a tripod nko51 to even get those shots!!!

I don't mind the rings either, Amanda. Overall, a great shot, but lighting is understandably a challenge.

You would obviously get better results with your 50mm f/1.8 lens. The kit lens' f/4.0 aperture is way too small for that kind of shot IMHO. A filter would help, and also take your shots in RAW and use the bundled Canon software to post-process. That ought to give you an extra two F-stops of brightness, over and above what you get with the 1.8 lens.

Thanks heaps James.. when in HK next weekend I'll give that a go! Hoping to come home with some decent shots
