To service or not to service

Hi All, after a long absence, I return to the Forum , Im the proud owner of
2nd Rolex, having had to sell my first 5513 due to financial woes, just bought a Datejust from my brother-in-law, its a 1601 made in 1966, it was inspected by our local rolex agent who suggested it should be serviced, watch hasnt been used for about 25 years and runs well, what is your opinion cheers Jonathan

Always service. Those scratches on the front may be cracks, so no longer water proof. The seals may be good, but probably not after 25 years. Just the thought of metal grinding on metal, eek.

I have my late 50's/early 60's manual wind that I love to death; serviced a few months ago. Just needed the usual (crown, tube and clean/oil).

Not an informed opinion

I'm a neophyte here on TRF with no real Rolex knowledge, but I can share my experience of having an old Rolex watch.

My 1965 GMT was worn about 12 years then tossed in a drawer. A couple of years ago I got it out and it ran fine except the stem was bent and I could not set the time.

I took it to RSC in Beverly Hills and they replaced the hands, dial, bezel and I don't recall what else. The bill was $970. I choked on that but since it was to be a gift to my son for graduation I bit the bullet.

my vote's for a complete service....it'll run & look great......I know it's expensive but you will love your watch & look on the bright side....it would need another service for a decade or so!

Well, if you want it to end up in the bin, then don't service it, on the other hand if you want to maintain the watch and have it for years to come then take care of it. It's a no brainer.

Service it. You can find many posts on this board here about watchmakers people have used and were happy with.

Replace the seals, at least. However, look for a good, non-Rolex watch guy. Rolex (and your AD) will have you for lunch if you send it in. A full service could run $300-$500 but don't be surprised if Rolex suggests replacing everything but the crown.

You've got a great watch.

Hi Steve, thank for the good advice, The Rolex agents here in Cape Town (Chronos , run by a very able german watchmaker - serviced my 5513 )quoted $320-350 for a full service, which im considering as soon as I get some more cash payments, will check with the local watch guy if he knows of any able watch makers that can do a mini service and replace the plastic glass with a crystral glass, thanks to all the other menbers for stressing the need of a service Cheers Jonathan
