What to engrave on watch given to my son.

I am thinking of giving my sub to my son. He has recently admired it and indicated he would like to have one someday so why not now. I can easily replace it if I so desire in 6-12mo. My initial thought was to engrave our initials with either birthyear or birthdate. Any suggestions. Thanks.

Love Dad and the date you give it to him.
Awesome gesture

I like the above, but I think Love Dad is plenty. No need for dates IMO.

My son is still young at only 8, but he loves my Cameron and it will be his someday. I plan on engraving it eventually and giving it to him when he graduates college.

I wouldn't engrave it but why not give him the new Sub instead?

Because I think it means more for him to wear the watch I have been wearing for the last 5 years. A part of me to him.

This would be my #1 choice.

I think engraved case backs really add that special touch to a gift. My wife engraved the Explorer she gave me on our wedding day.

Do you need to engrave it?

I’d keep it as simple as possible. Maybe just initials and that’s it.

I vote for "Love Dad." He will look at that engraving whenever he takes the watch off.

I agree. I gave my son my Submariner 114060 a couple years ago. I chose not to engrave it. I can still recall the look on his face when I surprised him with it. Just yesterday I was fortunate to pick up a 124060 Submariner at my AD.

I think every boy looks up to his dad. I think we all seek our dad’s approval to some extent.

The most important thing my dad could tell me is that he’s proud of me. That’s the ultimate seal of approval. I know he loves me, that’s almost a given in any good family. But is he truly proud of the man I’ve become? I think so, but I’m not sure he’s ever told me that.

So my answer is: “I’m so proud of you. Love Dad”

Nothing.

When he eventually flips it he'll need to go through some trouble & cost to get the case back replaced.

Whatever inscription you choose, I’d suggest using a skilled hand engraver. Machine/laser engraving is … often less great, imo.

Look at some pro engravings from before about 1960(?), and the difference is apparent. Fortunately, hand engraving has made a bit of a comeback - Several people post their work on IG.

Actually not that troublesome. Send it in to Rolex at the next service and ask for a new case back. It’s not that expensive and no additional downtime.

I had Love Mom and Dad engraved on my sub, I plan on gifting it to him at this time next year when he graduates university. I like the engraving, adds some personalization to it instead of "oh no don't do that it ruins future resale". It's meant to be something I enjoyed but now want to pass on to him so he can also enjoy and remember.

If he wants something for future investment and resale there are all sorts of other avenues for that.

I gave my son my three-year-old Submariner but did not engrave it. He wears it every day and just recently moved to California from Ohio. It's now become even more precious to him.

Oddly enough my wife and I had this discussion the other day... I won't tangent this thread, but I'm 37 with 3 of my own kids and I'll be sure to let them know I'm proud of them.
