Paying Over for a Car

Personally, I think my Chevy guy is tone deaf. And given all the C19 conversations, I thought this would be a better discussion.

A few months ago my buddy that owns the dealership let me know that he has a black on black on black LT3 C8 coming in. It would be 10k over.

I thanked him for the info and requested he contact me upon arrival.

He texted me yesterday with pictures. It sure is pretty. I asked him to confirm my cost.

MSRP of 89k and 10k over.

Given the world we are living in today, I thought it was wishful thinking. I would have debated it at MSRP. I am not looking to hurt anyone, and I want him to make his money.

But 10k over, for a car, in todays world...seems silly.

But...maybe because it is a brandy new C8 with a very desirable build...

No, I am not buying this thing. Not gonna happen. I have my sights elsewhere.

Curious though, you guys think he will get the 10k over?

I think that anyone paying this much over in this uncertain time, is likely taking advantage of this uncertain time to get a deal on a much nicer car. That's just my thought process.

What do you guys think?

I don't think he will get $10k over but he will probably tell everyone that he did.

Yes, he will. Still a lot of money out there, and this new C8 was just what the Corvette needed to stay relevant. I like um!

Especially the model you describe!

He might get it, depends on how desperate someone is at the moment.

I have been following these on corvette forum. The premiums have dried up in blnr like fashion. A dealer offered 5 orders from drop out customers for msrp but those were not yet delivered and the bowling green plant is not currently open.

Basically like rolex the amount of buyers willing to pay over is down but there may be very few 2020s delivered.

At this point I think MSRP is the only price to pay.

Anything is possible, but with what's going on not likely. He will hold his price and see if gets someone which makes sense, needs to try. If it doesn't work then the obvious will occur. I would never pay over for a car.

For some, money is no object. So, if your buddy lucks into one of those guys, then he’ll get his premium.
But in the economic climate we’re currently experiencing I think that I would take whatever I could get just to make a sale.
Or he could hold onto the car until things improve hoping for the general public’s purse strings to loosen up.

Paying Over for a Car

Dang, it’s just a car. Like watches, I have NEVER paid over list for a hot model car. In fact, with the exception of one car, I have never paid sticker. Always less than sticker in good times or bad.

Maybe that’s just me, but that’s how I buy them.

Chevy's current TV advertising would suggest that demand for their cars and trucks has cratered to levels unseen since the US government had to swoop in and save the day last time. In fact, the current buying incentives seem to indicate that this one might just be worse.

I'd wait too!

Good luck with that in times like this.

We are not talking a Porsche GT or the latest Ferrari mid-engine car.

Its sounds like a Gran Sport at that price. I've been a Vette fan, owner all of my life, know many and worked for a few chevy dealers and still now work with some as a buyer/seller being in the car biz my whole life near detroit. My 'buddy' who I've known for many years owns a Chevy store said he'd get me one for msrp and not a long wait. He actually made a joke about some dealers gouging, it's not uncommon especially when they know you, like their doing you a big favor by pushing you up the list C'mon...I agree though, black is the color.. They started rolling in everywhere since early march. He got three in one day one, 2 reds (1 GS) and a blue. I wouldn't pay over, wait a little if you have to, the hype has already faded some and I'll bet more potential buyers will be backing off now due to this current situation. One more thing, dealers are crying hard being shut down, when they re-open you can bet they'll be very hungry and there could be more Vettes around now than we think..

Almost every car event has been either canceled or postponed, from the NCRS, Corvettes @ Carlisle, to Bloomington Gold. No action, none.....

These Corvette Crazy guys are chomping at the bit to be the "FIRST" on the block to have one. I know one finatic that's had placed his deposit on one 3 years ago! No joke, he found a dealer that accepted his money, and waited.

Just wait til they throw the ZO6 or ZR1 or whatever name they have for the higher HP motor......

A 10% premium is not too bad for a Corvette. Its such a pretty car and you can be first for 10k. Im guilty of paying 30-60% over for watches

fair enough. and a fair opinion, as it is fact that an awful lot of people are dying in NJ...as with NY and the rest of the country and world. but as with everything, it depends on the delivery.

it is easy enough to say what you said without calling anyone an idiot.

just my opinion.

I own a Corvette and have been following this over on the Corvette Forums. Only reason I can see someone paying over MSRP right now is because the shortage of 2020 C8 models due to the CV shutting down the assembly line. Aside from that, I'd say wait 12 months and you'll be able to get one for MSRP or less.

I too have no problem paying over for a watch.

A car on the other hand...it would depend largely on the car. But for me, not for a corvette.

Given the fact that demand is high and supply is low, the short answer is yes. Someone will walk in and buy it. Hell, we have people paying 10k over on a Daytona.

MY 2020 was short to begin with, made even shorter by the pandemic. People who put down deposits for a 2020 and did not or will not get them will be given first crack at the 2021’s. I wouldn’t be surprised if the 2021’s sell out before they even begin to build them.

If I were you, I would put a refundable deposit down with one of the top three dealers for a 2021 and wait. Try Kerbeck, MacMaulkin or Criswell.

I see your point - I wasn't calling you an idiot for contemplating it. People can do as they wish and if you got the cash then it speaks for itself.

I tend to call people clowns, idiots, tough guys in everyday humorous banter. My wife calls me a clown on a daily basis, so I guess I'm immune to it? But, again what shows up in text doesn't always convey the "smirk" or humorous vibe.

Full disclosure - my uncle was and is an idiot/clown. A few months after he bought the yellow corvette hes married some lady who he has been trying to divorce since 2013.

My friend is the Sales Manager for large dealership that sells Cadillac, Land Rover & Jaguar at his location. He said the past 3 weeks have been a disaster.

I think to pay over MSRP right now is crazy but then again there are a lot of crazy people in this world. I hope for him he gets his price, times are tough.

Paying a premium on a mass produced, domestic car, is only good if you want to be the first guy at Cars & Coffee to have one.

fair enough. thank you or clarifying. fwiw, I did not think you were talking about me.

I stated clearly I was not contemplating the purchase.

and thanks for the full disclosure. it helps add context.

Which Corvette Crowd? The purist sports car crowd that can't wait for the LT3 C8, or the other, arguably larger Corvette Crowd that gets the convertible so that their chest hair can blow in the wind?
