Is giving a Rolex for Christmas gone?

Unless you are a whale, is going shopping for a Rolex to give as a Christmas gift part of history? For the most part, you cannot just walk into an AD between Thanksgiving and Christmas, pick one out, and take it home. Is anyone expecting to give one to their significant other this holiday season?

it really just depends on the model. sure it will be tough for steel subs, GMTs, daytona. but while perhaps you can't go to the store and pick one of those up, there is always the waitlist if you are an established customer for those pieces. you may get one before Thx giving.

Yes, I agree it definitely makes gift giving an issue. This year my FIL retired and also celebrated his 70th birthday. Would have been nice to go to my AD and pick something up, and was thinking either Explorer or OP (before the new one came out). But neither readily available and didn’t want to play the game of “order in advance and hope it arrives on time.” So settled on different non-watch gifts.

No. I think you can still get whatever you want. One simply needs to pay more for it with a great AD relationship or grey dealer.

Almost every time I walk into my AD someone is in there buying their wife/daughter/significant other a new watch. They always have good stock of those pieces and despite our forum bias, they are very popular. Not as many men’s pieces but always some tutone DJ’s or DayDates to choose from.

I typically plan out these purchases as far in advance as possible. Bought my son’s grad present for next May, in June of this year. For Christmas I typically start the conversation with my AD in Sept / Oct.

It's close to impossible to get "that Rolex gift" for a loved one on Christmas especially because of the unending waitlist and scarcity.

In this case too, I doubt a special bond with an AD will help in anyway.
So the option will be getting from a grey seller or asking Santa to drop it by the window...

You can walk into a Rolex boutique and buy A Rolex, just not sports models / 41 DJ

However you can walk into any pre owned watch store and buy any existing Rolex model for the current market price. No issues with Christmas what so ever

Plenty of TT DJ41 in my AD on my last visit, there were also a couple of YM on an OF and a DD all in the window, true not a Sub, GMT or any of the other unobtainables on display but with demand so high for these pieces that wasn't expected.

So, can you buy a Rolex after Thanksgiving and have the recipient open the present on Christmas Day, yes you can. All you have to realise is that you have to work with what is available.

You can still walk into an AD any time of the year and pick up a new Rolex, Christmas, spring summer, autumn, winter no problem. AD cases are full of Rolex watches. As others have said the issue is if you are after one of the popular models new, especially the St St sports models then chances are you won't get one.

This. I do buy watches as gifts for family or employees at times. Most don't know a sub from a datejust anyway. They just know it's a Rolex and that's all they care about. AD can get any ladies DJ within 7-10 days and for 41 DJ maybe 2-3 weeks.

If I know someone is an aficionado that's the only time I have gifted a ss model. That requires planning to get it in before a holiday or event, so you just have to adjust accordingly.
