I always pick a watch based on function. The sub date for me would win as it has time, date, and key for my job the ability to measure elapsed time with the bezel. Ideally the sub and DJ can live nicely together in a collection.

I appreciate all the feedback. That’s why I posed the question. You all gave me great thoughts to ponder.

TBH, if somebody works in a suit and tie environment, I would highly suggest a leather strapped piece first.

I don’t understand why everybody acts like a ‘dress watch’ in 2020 can’t bear the brunt of every day desk diving and somebody needs a professional dive watch to type away on a keyboard. It’s kind of hilarious actually I just feel so many people unnecessarily limit their options thinking they ‘must’ get a diver as their first/main watch and it’s not true at all.

DJ41, it has more character. I just prefer it over the sub.

A common response is “get both”.
I would choose the Submariner date primarily for its looks.
If you feel comfortable wearing a Sub for the work you do, I’d get the Submariner.
If possible try the Sub and DJ of your choice and let your heart decide.
Good luck and post a pic.

I have both watches. Had the sub for many years and just recently picked up a blue dial DJ 41. If its my only watch, I would choose the Sub first.

Datejust 41 and here is why...

+ You can make it your own with different options.
+ Longer history than the submariner.
+ When you dress up it's better and when you dress down - it's better ;-)
+ Everyone goes for the Sub, go for something special and something YOU can relate to

I personally have a DJ 41 blue face, fluted, jubliee. I have a Black Bay (maroon) as my "sub" because I like to do something a little different than everyone else.

Good luck!!!

The Submariner. A very versatile watch and it looks good with a suit or casual.

Without knowing more about your sense of style (or day to day lifestyle), it’s tough to make a recommendation. Both are fine choices though

DJ41. Black dial, jubilee, fluted bezel

Why? I've had different color dials in the past. As beautiful as they are, I prefer black for my daily. Also at this point I prefer the DJ to the Submariner. It's more comfortable on the wrist. YMMV.

Sub for me. Timing bezel is an additional function that I use all the time when I wear my Sub. Could care less about resell values since I bought to own and wear.

They are both great, but I would get a Sub before a DJ.

Get both but go for the Submariner and the DateJust, these two watches would cover almost every eventuality you come across.

If you go w the DJ, you will not stop thinking about the sub.
I would get the sub and if for some reason it doesn't 'do it' for you, easy sell and easy to get the DJ.

If you wear a dress shirt everyday with buttoned, slim cuffs then a date just is the right way to go. If not, get the sub...there is no better versatile watch than a black sub!

I like the elegance of a DJ (though I prefer 36MM to 41MM). The thing is that the sub is so damn practical. I have used the rotating bezel from everything from cooking steaks, baking bread, waiting for food from the food truck ... etc

i am currently sub-less at the movement. I sold my green sub after rolex discontinued it and replaced it was a five digit GMT, and two other watches. I will get a black no date sub soon though.

It really depends on the state of your collection. If you are starting with a serious piece, I'd say go with the Sub.

Personally I am at a stage in my watch collecting journey where the last thing I want is another black dial diver. I've always liked the 5 digits Sub and objectively I find the latest 2020 black Sub 12x perfect. As a first serious watch I would have probably bought one.

However, today I can't see myself wearing one as I find it a bit uninspiring, a bit boring to me TBH. Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic piece, possibly the most iconic watch in the world. It's just that I've got that look covered with the Planet Ocean 2500C XL, the SD43 and a few other pieces. But to tell you the truth I don't feel like wearing black watches lately so that might be my main reason for not wanting a black Sub.

To me the most beautiful 2020 Sub is the Bluesy. I mean that dial is something else and the steel/gold/blue colour combo is fantastic. It's fun to wear and to look at, it plays with the light like nothing else. It's so vibrant, that's exactly what I needed in my otherwise sober and conservative collection made of black, white and silver dials.

The blue DJ on the other hand is far more interesting to me than the black Sub, especially with fluted bezel on jubilee, the full monty. It has that super classic and unpretentious elegance about it. A very classy piece. I find it so interesting I could definetly add one to my collection at some point. Other than the blue DJ, I wish Rolex would use the same mint green colour from the new 2020 DL31 in the DJ41.

Sub date hands down.

Timing bezel and clasp make it much more useful ad a daily watch. Can’t really go wrong either way though they are both great watches.

OP, not sure if I missed it, but if you give us the configuration of the DJ41, it will help us out (fluted/smooth, jubilee/oyster, dial colour and markers). Thanks.
