Paypal Goods & Services Protection

Hello all,

I apologize if this is not the right place for my question, please feel free to move it, but maybe there are other members as well, who would benefit from your answers.

I am about to make an offer to an out-of-state seller for a Rolex. I don't know the seller, but he is willing to provide ID/Place of Work-Information. I am also certain, that we can agree on a Bill of Sale including ID copies. I have checked the serial of the watch and contacted the original customer of the AD. All checks out regarding the watch.

Regarding payment, I am ok to spend the 2.9% extra for Paypal Goods & Services. I also have the choice to link my Paypal account to either a VISA or American Express Credit Card.

Given everybody's experience with purchases from individuals through Paypal, is the Paypal-Buyer's-Guarantee a real protection for me, and if so, on which level? Has anybody had any experiences with Paypal in cases like this and how did they get resolved?

Of course, I am trying to limit (or eliminate) my risk as a buyer in this transaction. No wires, no BTC, no Paypal F&F. But is this then the way to go?

Thank you for your help and feedback.

As the more experienced members of TRF pointed out over and over again , if you are worry about losing your money, then " buy the SELLER before the WATCH "

What you’re proposing has nothing to do with PayPal and to do with seller. If he’s sold scores of watches with correspondingly outstanding reviews, fine; if not, nothing about PayPal or a bill of sale is gonna save you from some heartburn.

Yep use PP and CC . You are totally protected , if piece is not what it was represented to be - back it goes! If you use CC you are doubly protected. Just mo from experience.

Use PayPal and pay the fee. You’ll be protected via PayPal Buyer Protection and also via your credit card issuer. DO NOT pay via the friends/family method as that will offer you zero protection.

The above said, as others have mentioned be sure you’ve done all your due diligence and if something seems off, walk away. Sounds like you’re already doing all the right things

I've paid on pay pal through F&F to known sellers but when buying anything expensive like a Rolex and your not 100% sure of the seller I've paid the fee. Do not take any chances.

So there actually is some level of protection from PayPal G&S.

I would never do F&F.

I would prefer VISA over Amex, any views on that, please?

I much prefer AMX. I have had problems with venders on high ticket and they immediately resolve the problem. Not sure about Visa but have found AMX to be very protective and responsive to safeguard their card holders.

Only level of protection w/PP is if the seller is legit and the funds don’t disappear via a PP transactional fraud.

If you’re looking for back-up CC protection, Amex is better than Visa IMHO.

Is this a trusted seller or not?

Thank you all for your input - highly appreciated.

Unfortunately, the seller is not a trusted seller, just an individual selling his first (maybe second) watch.

F2F would be easiest, but it's half way across the country.

I am not sure why this matters from a PayPal perspective? If you choose to pay for "Goods & Services" I don't know if there is any concept of a "trusted seller". You are protected by their Buyer Protection policy. I could be incorrect in this and just never really noticed what a "trusted seller" means on PayPal.

Well said.

OP you are well protected as mentioned above. The few times I bought used, I also sent the watch into Rolex for added peace of mind, but that's just me.

PP for the most part, sides with the buyer when the reason is valid. I would also use Amex as it seems to have better option of the utilization of points (assuming you're signed up of course)

Maybe give PP a call for added security?

PP usually sides with buyers.

Reason why some sellers don’t accept PP. It’s a huge risk

AMEX give great support and even resolved an issue for me that PayPal washed their hands of.

It would be my goto method of payment if available.
