Anyone in NY have car storage?

Trying to figure out a cost effective way of keeping a second (fun) car. I don't want to just double my current parking bill and have two expensive spots in the city.

I've seen some storage options outside of the city but it's basically the same cost. Trying to figure out if I'm missing something else that might be out there.

Anyone solved this one?

No real help in parking options.

But what kind of cars are we taking about.

Nothing crazy, but been wanting to get into a 911 of some sort. Probably a 4 or 4s. Have also been glancing at some older 911s but not sure I want to go that way.

Long term keeper kinda thing.

Already have a "family" which I keep in the city. As you might know parking in NYC runs in the $400-600 range monthly. And so I'd prefer not to be forking out $1000 a month for parking (for 2 cars).

I actually though parking was more than that.

That’s brutal.

Manhattan will be tough. I’m in Queens, so I have a garage on my tiny 40x100 lot. I keep a weekend car and a daily beater, no problems.
Have you thought about joining a car club? You get to choose a different car a few weekends a year.

Try this...

A woman drives her Rolls Royce up to Chase bank in Manhattan, leaves the car at the curb and goes in. She speaks to the branch manager, explains that she needs a $10,000 loan for 2 weeks and is willing to leave her Rolls as collateral. The manager sees this as a sure thing and tells her the interest rate will be 10%. She said, that's fine, and walked out with $10,000 cash.

Two weeks later she comes back to the bank, returns the $10,000, pays the $38.46 interest fee and the manager gives her the keys to her car.

Before the woman leaves, the manager asks her if he could ask her why she needed $10,000...certainly she could come up with that on her own if she owns such an expensive car, to which she replies...where else in Manhattan can I park my car for 2 weeks for less than $40!

Keep in mind the exotic up charge for parking in Manhattan. Best option is to have place outside the city and keep there. The words Manhattan, parking, exotic and inexpensive do not go well together.

I’m also 10+-miles away. You can park it in my garage for free! I’ll even start the car and drive it around a few miles each month. Send me an IM if interested.

You should be able to rent a garage in a outer Borough for $175-$225. Preferably one with electricity for a trickle charger would be ideal. At the end of the day you need to decide if paying 50-65% less is worth the "trip" for you.

Did you try and approach your garage and tell them this one will be used in low frequency and get a 2 car deal etc?

I don't see a reason why the garage would care. Demand is high in Manhattan so they would obviously prefer to rent the spot at the higher rate.

Place is awesome!!

Took a trip up near Bear Mountain with a convoy with them and 8 guys.

We had a 56 Porsche 550 Spyder, Lambo Huracan, Mclaren (570 IIRC), & a Ferrari 458 Spider... Man, that was a fun day and the weather was perfect!

The ride back I was driving the Huracan just a touch over the speed limit on the Palisades.

Boy have things changed.

I lived in the West Village from 1980 to 1989. Being a kid from Queens, I couldn't give up the car. I found a spot in the Perry Street Garage on Perry and Greenwich. The indoor spot, at the time was $89.00 a month.

By the time we moved in 1989, it had gone up to $250 a month.

I wish you a lot of luck finding a space in Manhattan.

You could try Deluxe Car Storage in New Hyde Park, NY. I know some of the guys that work there and have spent quite a bit of time there myself. It's literally next to the train station for easy access from the city. Only thing I don't know is cost, but it's worth a call.

As much as I agree with your logic, it can't hurt to ask.

I did the reverse commute when I lived in NYC. Lived in the west village and worked in Paramus, NJ. Parked my car at Secaucus, $59 a month for nights and weekends. Out by 9:30, in after 5pm. All day Sat and Sun. An awesome deal since it fit exactly what I needed.

The Ferrari dealer I buy cars from (Wide World in Spring Valley) has storage on their second floor for $300~/month. I haven't a clue if that works for you but it's there.

I'm in Hoboken and garages are $250-$300/mo. Could be an option if you don't mind taking the Path train, ferry, or bus every time you want to use the car.

Yip, and I think as some others have pointed out $500/month is middle of the range for covered parking in Manhattan.

That may not be the craziest idea. Ideally I'd want to be able to swap out the cars. Drive up, leave one there, take the other etc.

I think they were close on the cost of keeping the car in the city. I should check in with them again though. Thanks!

You know I've done the permutations on this place a few times in the last ten years. It never seemed to be worth it for me, although it is of course more economical than spending $6k a year on parking alone! Hmmm.

Look outside of Manhattan. I rented out my garages out for $200 a spot indoor that holds 2 cars. Thats in Bensonhurst. Its a lot cheaper out side of Manhattan.

I grew up in that area. Passed by a hundred times. Went in once or twice to browse. So nice.

Thanks for all the input guys. May look into renting a spot in BK or Queens.

I’m in the same boat as you. Looking at picking up a fun second car later this year and having a hard time justifying 2 nyc parking spot rents.
