I gotta believe the big resellers track the actual selling prices on a daily basis.

Trad ins etc are also data.

Occasionally they "fish", I remember a 16570 "parachrome" run up the flagpole for about a $3K premium. Doesnt appear anybody saluted.

Top people at DavidSW etc are monitoring this daily.

They'll see a coming price slide before us and react accordingly.

Civilians like us will not see anything until it's too late

I certainly don’t monitor prices on an ongoing basis, but I do go to grey websites to see what new things they have. My unscientific look at Skydweller prices shows consistency over the last few months. If they are “down” it’s a minor fluctuation. My own grey dealer seems to show an uptick in Rolex sales. Like I said…not scientific, just anecdotal.

Oh no surely prices are not collapsing. It’s all in free fall! Sell whilst you can not when you have to. I ran into a couple of buyers and whacked their bids. Come off it we’re all brokers here !

People ignore the worldwide pandemic and the government response and think these shortages will just continue and prices will just continue upwards and upwards. They are emotionally invested in this. Mention of reality can provoke a hostile response - how dare you suggest the price of a second hand watch can be found for a lower price this month than last month! It is very strange to me. This behaviour/thinking is not just seen with Rolex watches. The shortages and price increases are not just affecting Rolex watches. Normal business will resume, eventually, - in my opinion.

You make some very excellent points. I’m interested to see what happens. A correction back to normal Would be awesome. Yesterday I was looking at gold prices and the cost to buy a one KG brick of gold from the exchange is around the same cost as a platinum Daytona at retail. That’s insane. Due to the demand the Daytona is theoretically worth more. I mean we are talking about a KG brick of gold here. This just goes to show what people currently place more value on. I’m not looking to go down the rabbit hole of what’s right or wrong, simply just pointing out how the market views what’s valuable.

The "market" buys hundreds of millions of NFTs....

It all reminds me of the dot.com boom in the late 90s

I have to say, I honestly don't care what happens with the current fluctuations. The Sky Dweller won't be going anywhere so the resale value as it stands is completely irrelevant to me.

I have three watches two I paid premium and one under retail. I think though if the bubble burst I would be gutted because I would always want that option on a rainy day to get back what I paid. If I don’t get a profit that doesn’t bother me.

My favorite part is going on Davidsw and looking at new releases that were supposedly sold 2 weeks ago that are relisted for 2k more. I hope people are taking notes before buying from a grey at the Hyped prices. This game will stop and anybody that says it’s here to stay is either the grey or someone who benefits from selling to the grey. Watches are sitting on the shelf longer and it’s the holiday season….what’s that telling you?

Exactly…..if a watch doesn’t sell, they list it as sold then jack up the price and put it up a week later……not exactly a scam but pretty close…

I have a few saved searches on Chrono24. Lots of stock and lots not moving. Thing is, vendors can sit on stock. It’s not hard to keep a watch sitting around. They won’t suddenly start crashing their own prices. Even when nobody is buying these things the prices will remain high.

Only way for prices to actually go down is for 1-2 major vendors to need cash for something else and start lowering prices. So a realistic example would be Rolex AP and Patek becoming uncool and less hyped, models sit in grey inventory, independents become ultra hyped and everyone starts buying independent brands(think microbrewery effect on Budweiser and other big beer brands). These vendors then need capital to buy up independents to sell and make margin. They aren’t going to a bank to get a loan, they’re going to liquidate old stock. It’ll just take a couple big players liquidating stock to get ahead of the new independent hype game to see a cascade of prices for the non hype models. But it all hinges on tastes and demand. As long as these 2015-2021 models remain in enough demand with no alternatives we will see prices kept high.

Basically you people need to start fiending after Breguet complications and tonneau dress watches and independent makers en masse.

The first people to sell off will be the goofs that bought multiple of the same reference as an investment or purchased recently for grey price and have the most to lose if their $35k Daytona purchase drops down to $18k value in a year while all their friends are rockin Moser and Journe

Will be fun to keep an eye on in coming years. I think Rolex will be strong through 2022 tho

Apparently we are all stuck in the matrix. Reality, on the other hand, is like porn. You’ll know it when you see it. Unfortunately the matrix seems to be here for the foreseeable future.

It’ll only last as long as people who get sucked into paying triple to get a 2015-2021 watch now. Like something in the past 7 years made these watches God tier and the ones before it are trash.

There’s a reason brands pay influencers on social media, it works! Someone with extra $ laying around watches an episode of Timepiece Gentleman and buys into the hype train and gets a Pepsi for $20k because the internet told them it’s cool and a good investment. I don’t think they will share those stories with the grand kids. :p

Yeah I have noticed that too. With quite a few Grey websites. Never ever seen Tony do it though. Another reason he is on my speed dial

My favorite grey dealer has a black face Skydweller (new) for “only” $27,595; those prices are dropping like a stone!
