What's wrong with the Patek Phillipe World Time?
I have read various posts on here with general complaints about the World Time having design flaws where it can't accurately tell time in certain timezones despite having the option for it, among other complaints. Can any of you guys please clarify specifically what the pitfalls of the World Time are?

So the World Time is 100% accurate for all of the 24 timezones on it, but it simply lacks the ability to goto the half time zones which are not present on the watch? I guess in other words, the watch has no inherent issues telling accurate time in the available 24 time zones on it?

It can’t show the correct time in any other countries. But don’t feel bad the Rolex ceramic GMT’s are in the same boat. Buy a Seiko Astron.

Can you tell.me why this is? I'm trying to understand mechanically what the issue is that causes this.

It doesn’t support half hour and 45-minute time zones. If you are in India for example you just can’t get it to show correct world times if you have set the local time there.

Yes, the World Time does not account for Daylight Savings Time, which means it is inaccurate for 6 months of the year in many timezones and thus renders the complication in my opinion relatively useless.

Is there a brand with a world timer that solves all these problems?

Its not possible, even watches that cater for daylight saving cant cope with the fact that daylight saving happens at different times around the world - they will at some points in time be incorrect.

Great pieces for any major Patek collection or the museum, less useful for every day...

Heard a few times about mechanical watches being gorgeous anachronism. I share that sentiment.

Who cares? The PP world timer is terrific. There is a watch which covers all the voiced concerns. Its Japanese quartz. Dont recall which brand, but just read about it few weeks ago.

I eventually sold my 5110J. Absolutely loved the way it looked but Pateks unwillingness to commit to update the city ring at service intervals, absence of DST indicators make this a very impractical watch.

There are no mechanical world time watches that are perfect for all the reasons stated. I ended up with the JLC linked below. It does not cover the half hour zones (some of the VC world time pieces have 37 time zones-- but the dial is a bit cluttered and does not deal with daylight savings time). I struggled with tradeoffs and this is how I decided on the JLC. I also like that I can use it as a GMT with a second time zone so when I travel can have home time either on the main or subdial. Admittedly I am not wearing it too often and might sell it. I like it does deal with daylight savings zones but as mentioned does not take into account different countries change on different dates and even within the USA some states do not recognized daylight savings.
I love the Patek world timers but the lack of a seconds hand is a non-starter for me.. https://monochrome-watches.com/jaege...ld-time-price/ |

Lovely horological anachronisms now popular mainly for rarity and their disappearing displays of artistic enamel painting, some subjectively better than others. Not practical any more for what they were designed and needed for many decades ago. True that Rolex GMTs suffer some of the same shortcomings with fractional hour time zones, but they offer a sweep second hand for timing events and a date function for a small fraction of the cost of the WTs.

No problem. Now that the EU is getting rid of Daylight Savings Time soon, the main timezone I always needed to be correct and most cared about (Central European time, Geneve on the dial) and used to only be off 2 weeks a year will now also be 'wrong' 50% of the year. That was the final straw and dealbreaker for me. The other timezones being off 50% of the year was a minor inconvenience but again, Patek should commit to update the city ring if needed and add DST indicators. It could be subtle to preserve the clean dial layout, they have great designers.. they could figure out something

Yes, with the EU ditching DST, the flaw now becomes a deal breaker. Hopefully this will steer PP into coming up with a solution.
