Congrats I really like the 5196 lately. Thought about one myself a few times. Enjoy it

Not sure if most people know the heritage of the 5196... and the importance of this reference to Patek. The 96 was monumental to Patek in my mind... we’ve all been to that point in our lives where there is that one thing that reshapes the rest of our lives...i kind of feel like the 96 was that moment.

If i was not expecting other watches coming. Id probably act on the impulse.
I have one and wear it often.. I notice new things about it with nearly each wear. It’s a deceptively large dress watch. It is a masterpiece.

I feel 5196 as the quintessential of a traditional watch, in my case I love all the metals but I tend to prefer the dial on the YG and in this case YG as the most traditional.
While I receive the confirmation that AD is able to source one by July and before starting to check other ADs in the area for stock, I can not stop watching this video:

RG is super-nice I really like the vintage touch of the grey dial, I understand that RG is the most sold and for sure is for a good reason.
Last week I visited or called all ADs in South California to purchase it, very little 5196 stock, 2ADs with RG and one with PT and RG, one of the ADs had a YG in another state but we did not reached an agreement in price.
Where I live there is not Patek AD, my next opportunity window is a trip to Spain in July, by the way prices there are good if you are non resident and able to do a tax refund.

I had the same dillema and bought a 5296 over a 5196. This is a Patek Phillipe, I want to see the movement.

Only reason to get the 5196 is the better pricepoint, IMO.

Lol, i guess. I can see the movement in my other watches

Or you really enjoy the fact that this is a larger version of the original 96... you know,...the watch that effectively saves the company

Tempted to dive right in and get one.

Should I got down the AD route or get a better price at a trusted dealer?

@fatninja, what did you mean by this watch saving the company?

This is when the brothers bought out patek because it ran into financial difficulties. The sterns was actually the dial makers. They needed to produce a hot selling watch that appealed to collectors and normal people... so the 96 was born.

That article right there will be the reason I buy the 5196. If I had any hesitation before, I'm sold!

But I'm still torn on metal. Most likely WG but RG is also compelling.

Similar but different. In bright light they both look similar.

The J looks lighter because of the dial vs the R with the grey dial. I go back and forth between which i like more lol.

Cant go wrong tho. Timeless.

Yes, all metals are great, each one with its own personality.

Have you purchased additional straps?

And this is why Patek does not want you to see the movement of their 5196... They can't be bothered updating the movement to fit the case. At least they did not use a plastic spacer...

Because they are Patek and should strive for excellence?
On that same note, why then bother with any type of hand finishing or movement decorations, should the movement just not work the same without them?

I understand your point of view, but at first I do not see any improvement doing it.
What they could do use the additional space for? More power reserve? Not sure if for the common use case of this case makes sense.
Regarding having a back show case, it might sense to have a bigger movement, but not sure if I prefer it if as I understand would make the watch thicker.
If they would be able to use that space to have a thinner movement that would make sense.

In my opinion Lange is very nice but quite different watch, in that line I would open Breguet Classique too.
I can see that you are in San Diego in CJ Charles La Jolla you can see all together (PP, Lange, JLC) , JLC Master ultrathin is a good alternative too if you look for RG or SS (SS is very very nice and of course much lower price)

No wonder... ;)

Patek is being very complacent and shouldn't be taking these kind of shortcuts. Vacheron, Lange, FPJ, etc., they all have properly fitting movements.

Very nice. In terms of CJ Charles, it's a personal thing and I have many friends who are VIPs/good customers of theirs....but I personally do not shop through them with my experience in the past. Certain things didn't sit right with me. Say hi to Brandon for me next time you're in the store.

My experience was really excellent, that was the first time that I went there but I had a personal reference with Brandon and we talked before as I am from out of US.
I went with a clear idea to purchase a 5196 but I was more towards YG and trying the RG did not changed my mind. Unfortunately my time window on that trip was very limited and he was not able to source the watch.
I visited almost all Patek dealers in South California and CJCharles stock I would say that it was the best, I would say that comparable or better to the Rodeo Drive boutique.
