Revisiting Flat Blue vs. Sunburst

Over the years has anyone changed their opinion as to whether flat blue dials or sunburst dials look better on TT subs?

I recall how years back most welcomed the change to sunburst in the TT sub, while everyone continued to love the flat blue dial on the WG sub.

How about now? Who would opt for a flat blue dial over a sunburst, and why? Who would continue to opt for sunburst, and why? And why do those who prefer the sunburst on the TT, love the flat dial on the WG sub?

I've never owned either, but I am now revisiting the thought of a flat vs. a sunburst TT sub. Would be great to hear from those who have had both!

Welp, I haven't had both but I do have the Sunburst TT Blue Sub C.
I never cared for the flat blue and wish Rolex came out with a
Sunburst Blue White Gold or steel Sub.... That would be the list of all
lists to beat... Forget Daytona C or Pepsi BLRO Jubilee, the
Blue Sunburst SS Sub would be envied and coveted
by all ....IMHO.

If they came out with a WG sunburst blue, I’d be first in line to consolidate my collection. Needless to say that goes for a SS sunburst as well. I love bluesy cause the sunburst, but it would be gone quick if the above happened. I’m not alone and Rolex knows this why it would never happen. The market would be flooded.

Revisiting Flat Blue vs. Sunburst

While I like both dials - I really like the flat blue — it is just unique to me

And I like how the dial matches the bezel.

I think the sunburst is just a special dial. I have a WG sub and I love the way the flat dial looks as well, but every time I see a sunburst I rethink it

If the WG sub had a sunburst dial, I don't know if I could resist.

Prefer flat blue dial because too many similar sunburst blue dial (too common). SkyD, TT Sub, YG Sub, WG Daytona, DJ34, DJ36, DJ39, DJ41, YM40 & DD36

I hadn’t realized they offered the flat blue in TT...

Looks great I had owned the sunburst TT as my first sub and have always loved that dial, the flat blue is just as nice and a great option

This one is a V serial —- these dial we’re floating around on the 116613s from around 08-10 ish I believe — but you can still find them.

I have had a WG sub and a two tone flat blue, now I have a 116618 Sunburst and like it better. But either way you cant go wrong. Flat blue is harder to find.

Thanks for sharing your pic! I too like the more uniqueness of the flat blue dial and the matching of the dial to the bezel. Just curious, when did you get the V serial, before or after the sunburst dials were available?

I also like the interesting contrasts of color of the sunburst and it would be interesting to hear from someone who has had TT subs with both dials. Any chance of seeing pics of both dials under similar lighting? Thanks!

I got my V serial right as the 6 digit sunbursts were being released — my Suburst is actually an S serial 16613 (circa 1994ish)— which now is starting to have more of a purple hue to it — so wouldn’t give you the comparison.

There are some other threads that have pics that I’ve seen over time — you might just do a search.

Every time I see this watch - I love it. I’ve been on and off the fence with it for YEARS.

It always stays at the top of my ‘list’....rightfully so!! The BEST YG professional Rolex in my opinion.

I dont know why people call it "FLAT" blue, lol, there seems to be a negative connotation behind it.
For me, i love both dials, it has different characters, and can be worn, depending on your mood, if you have both,
Both dials, to me, are simply unique and special

I am in the sunburst fan side but I do understand the beauty of the flat blue as it has a more consistent color in various light.

I remember being so excited with the release of the 6 digit subs... then very disappointed with the flat blue of the 13LB. I am thankful that Rolex finally came to their senses, and updated it with the sunburst blue dial!

I LOVE IT!
