Somewhat disappointed by human nature

So about a week or two ago, on another forum that is primarily watch related, a young man mentioned that he was interested in learning what all the fuss over fountain pens was really about. But he said he was out of work and so could not afford to buy when he had no idea if he would like them. Also, he lived in an area where there were no Brick & Mortar stores within hundreds of miles where he could test fountain pens.

I said I'd try to help him out with the sole condition that should he grow tired of or not like any of the pens he would pass them on to some other new user.

So I put together what I thought would be an interesting range, a couple Parker Vectors and a Parker 21 aerometric, a Sheaffer Prelude and a wonderful Sheaffer pen and pencil set; Sheaffer Sentinel Deluxe from 1947 that was restored by Gerry Berg.

To get him started I included some Parker and Sheaffer cartridges.

Well, the pens arrived almost a week ago yet so far I have not even heard that he got the package.

I understand this is not a really big issue but you would think that a PM at the forum saying "They got here" would be a reasonable expectation.

Is the guy's name Leviathan?

On a serious note, Jim you have done a good deed...just forget about the guy. I know how you feel though.

Wow, that is extremely kind and generous of you. I feel like you will be having a lot of good karma come your way. Here's to hoping he gets back to you and really appreciates them. I'm sure he will.

.
You are obviously generous and trusting, so don't take this the wrong way. If someone is out of work and worrying about how fountain pens write, either their story is off, or their priorities are wrong.

I hope I'm wrong and they follow up, but either you were scammed or supported someone with more sense of entitlement than ethics.

Been out of work and still wondered about things myself. And I've often gotten my priorities very wrong.

But it's also human nature to care and help each other. Which is what you did, and I'm sure will continue to do. You could easily keep your knowledge, collection, all to yourself, but share to help others in the community.

What an awesome gesture on your part

Hopefully he will thank you soon. Kind of sad that he had not reached out to you. Certainly understand your feelings about it.

I do not post here in the pen area, but follow some of the threads. I have a couple of MB pens (ballpoints and roller) but have been thinking of trying a fountain pen. Been looking in the sales area from time to time. I need to spend more time in this area doing research. You may see me hanging out more often.

I have met a lot of generous and noble people in my years, some in these forums, and Jim is at that top of that ladder.

I would be "dissatisfied" with the non-response perhaps even annoyed. You put together a wonderful package for him attempting to kick start his interest in a truly satisfying hobby and pastime. It's his loss, but I hope only temporarily.

You have the admiration of those of us that know you Jim. Not only on this forum, but on others in which I see you participating and being just as worthy as you are here. Perhaps that is a small gratuity given that probably this is not the only time your altruism has gone unrequited in even the smallest way. I think there will be a day when he will come around.

I for one appreciate your friendship to all of us! You will reap what you sow and for you that is a very good thing.

Finally got word. The pens all arrived alive. So far the person's favorite is the Sheaffer Prelude.
