What is it about Platinum?
I cannot for the life of me figure out why it looks so different than WG. I mean I know scientifically why (that WG is basically a yellow metal alloyed with other metals to make it look white-ish) but there is something about Platinum that really speaks to me. I'd be happy to hear from other folks who might shed some light on that or maybe I'm just imagining it.

To be honest I’ve never had the opportunity to compare platinum to anything else in person.
I know that white gold and stainless steel look different though! And silver. |

I’ve experience with both white gold (grey gold) and platinum. Love the heft and warmth of WG but nothing beats platinum. The pure white metal and shine of platinum is very special. It is my favorite precious metal.

I wish a platinum watch is something I could justify. Unfortunately it's more than i'm willing to spend on a watch for some time.

I’m with you my friend. Love platinum it looks great but it’s more than I’m willing to spend. 70k for a watch is a lot. I know some guys have it and I’m happy for them. But I have other things that require my attention. That’s basically school tuition for my 3 girls every year. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Regardless of the casework what speaks to me the most is the Rolex movement, history and timing performance. Sure, red gold, Platinum or whatever satisfy certain people but it's a vain bijou to me. No offense to anyone.

Even though people some people here argue that a second a day isn’t a big deal... I sure do love that Rolex watches live within -2/+2 a day. That is outstanding in the long run. |

I love the look and feel of platinum watches, also the Rolex alloy is 95% platinum (obviously) and 5% ruthenium, which is another metal of the platinum group and gives the alloy great strength.
It's also more discreet and rarer than gold. |

Also I love that Platinum is both more corrosion resistant and harder than any gold alloy. |

To me, gold is naturally yellow so couldn’t justify white gold for that reason. I do love platinum - more of a cold look (compared to the warmer tone of white gold), and pt looks much brighter when polished. It also looks better beaten up compared to white gold imo due to the different way patina occurs on platinum.
That said, in the Rolex lineup I’m not crazy about the YM2 in pt, and wish the bezel on the pt Daytona was not brown. The pt day date blue dial is sweet. Would be a tough call vs yellow gold though. I could envision a cool platinum GMT with ice blue dial, navy GMT hand. |

The question from me is, like much jewellery and many watch brands; do Rolex rhodium or palladium plate their WG and Platinum? Because these sheens, shines and tones are generally from the rhodium or palladium plate rather than the platinum or WG itself
Curious is all! |

platinum is colder than WG and brighter than SS. it’s subtle, but it also is fairly unique. i have been obsessed with platinum forever, and i’m very fortunate to be able to wear a platinum watch. i don’t find it all that heavy, but i know for SURE it’s there. it’s also a fun way to wear a statement that almost no one even realizes is there.

As noted platinum is a different alloy and looks, wears and feels different than other metals. Rolex does an outstanding job with it and it is almost a metal that if you know, you know. If not, then you believe it to be something else. For me, it is a folly that I embrace and enjoy.

I like platinum, its purity and sheen. If money wasn't an issue I'd ask Rolex to make me a platinum SD43 to be worn in special occasions.

Love platinum AND white gold. To my eye, the platinum has an almost sterling silver finish, very bright and metallic. White gold has a warmer hue, being slightly grey with yellow undertones. Definitely stainless steel is closer in look to platinum although has more of a blue undertone. And ... the weight of platinum is awesome.
For some reason, I get seriously pissed off when I scratch my stainless steel watches but don't care at all about scratches in the platinum one. No idea why, very strange. |
