Grey dealer offered to put my name on warranty card - legit?

A grey dealer here in HK (with a physical store) offered to put my name on the warranty card of certain models they have available.

Is this a legit practice? Are there any implications for warranty with this vs buying a model that is already named?

No, it’s just a name. What matters is that the card was swiped by the AD, therefore the 5 year warranty activated.

Is he an AD or a Grey?

Only an AD can swipe and activate the warranty for brand new pieces.

A Grey cannot activate a warranty. Hence some of the US Grey give their own warranty.

Most probably he has pre owned pieces where the owner name is blank and he will just write down your name. Nothing more.

If yes, just leave it blank in case you do sell the pieces down the road. The next guy may want his name on there.

When I bought my exp1 in Siam paragon in Bangkok, might be an Asian AD thing but they didn’t put my name on the warrantee card.
It was a nice selling point when I sold it 6 years later that the new owner can put his own name on it, if he wanted. Of course, the card is out of date so it is a gimmick (and irrelevant who’s name is actually on it) but some people like that sort of thing.

(Not relevant to thread, I also sold it with a fresh 2 year Rolex service warrantee just to make sure it was in factory condition so I wouldn’t get any hassle post-sale as it was my first private sale of a watch)

Bought mine all grey, my name on the card and warranty activated. Not that it matters, never needed any repairs.

What are some ways to check if the warranty card is activated? Is there a way to check on the card itself? Or you have to contact the original AD or a RSC

The warranty is a kind of insurance. Maybe you will need it, maybe not.

Than again, a simple regulation or some repair is really cheap at an RSC, nothing to worry about if one can afford 10K to buy a piece of jewelry.

I’d be leary of anything a grey does. With what’s going on in the world I’d hold off purchasing now chances are you’ll get a better deal if you just wait.

Me personally. Only buy newer models with warranty cards that have the AD printed on the card, and signed by the original purchaser. Then follow up with said AD to confirm SN and warranty validity. That is always good practice.

Yes. The card will have a date of sale written on it. That is the date the card was activated. I do not know, but I definitely would think ADs either hold back the cards and run them when the grey sells or run them when they sell off to greys. An un-activated card with the ADs name on it is big trouble for that AD if the card finds it way back to Rolex for a warranty repair.

It also creates big problems for the original purchaser who sold with the selling AD.

AD was busy chatting and forgot to write my name on a warranty card after activating it.

I called when I got home to check if that would be an issue at any point and was told no, it was only important that the card was activated.

I normally purchase direct with my AD. However with my one and only grey purchase. White Daytona 116500LN. I emailed the original AD and gave them the name, DOP, and SN. They wrote me back same day saying the watch was indeed purchased on that date with the serial number given. I even submitted the request through the Rolex online website, directed to the AD. They probably just looked past the “name”. In this instance, I wouldn’t be surprised the name on my card is on multiple pieces all over the world. The AD’s will use middle men to move inventory.

I immediately printed the email, and now keep it in the watch box.

I was going to buy a RG DD40 and the grey said he was going to source it brand new with my name on it. I am assuming they use their extensive network of ADs to source good deals so they can add their margin. It probably also helps their spend at the AD for more allocations.
