42mm Question…

I was at the Panerai boutique in Las Vegas yesterday and they only had 1 42mm model in there, a white-dial submersible. Is Panerai veering away from this case size in the future?

Yes, I've been told they're going 40mm and 44mm. They didn't see a need for a 42mm as well.

We’re the 42mm Subs not received well? Did the go 42mm in an attempt to compete with the Submariner? It’s interesting how Panerai Subs were getting smaller while Rolex dive watches, especially the Sea Dweller, we’re getting bigger.

That’s a good question although they appear to still be carrying and releasing 42 mm pieces.

I’ve sold or traded all my Panerai, except for the 1055 (Green dial Submersible) in 42 mm.
That size (for me) has always worked best on my 7 inch wrist.
I know PAMs are supposed to wear large but I prefer the 42s. YMMV.

The Goldtech Submersible, PAM02164, is a 42mm. They had it in the Vegas boutique a couple of weeks ago but maybe it sold.

I guess the idea is for larger appeal and that 42mm wasn’t massively different from the 44mm size. I fine 44mm too big and 40mm too small.

I’m looking for a NOS or well kept PAM01392 with the beige numerals and open case back. It’s the only PAM that appeals to me in the Goldilocks 42mm

A few weeks ago I set down the path to find a watch with dual-purpose capability of both casual and dress-ware. I then decided to try to thread the needle and see if could also kill 2 birds with 1 stone and acquire my first Panerai. I knew I loved the Panerai font and wanted a sandwich dial. Beyond that, my comprehension of Panerai history and the model number rabbit hole was very pedestrian. What an emotional roller coaster during my Panerai immersion and search! Yesterday I finally pulled the trigger on a 42mm 574 Radiomir with black alligator strap in immaculate condition from Japan. I have had great success acquiring extremely pristine 2nd hand watch samples from Japanese dealers and hope the trend continues here. Now the wait begins.

Anyway, I have come across many posts suggesting this 11mm thick, 42mm watch will look very sharp on a 7” wrist, but can be dressed down as well with the proper straps. But, OMG, landing on this choice was, by far, the most grueling watch search I’ve yet made after a decade of watch acquisition. Hopefully, no regrets. Once again, first priority, was locate a watch that could work with a (black) suit but also dress down… being a Panerai would be a bonus. Let’s see where this goes.

That watch will look fantastic with a suit. The Radiomir also came before the Luminor so you are squarely in the DNA of the brand. The 42mm Mare Nostrums are also amongst the most desired pieces the brand has ever produced.

Of course the brand would be much better off if it was still producing the 183 and 190 and never developed all these other model numbers and variations in my view.

Came with black alligator strap.

I found a more casual strap in my drawer to dress it down a bit for now.


I'm very happy with the decision to purchase. I really love everything about this watch. On my 7" wrist has a similar presence as my BLNR, I think.

Looks great - congrats on picking it up! I’ve considered the 574 once or twice. One of these days I’ll cave.

I had my choice of the 42 or 44mm bianco subs back in December, snagged the 42 and no regrets. I absolutely love it. Goes great with my 973 in black, which I’m also a fan of.

The 42mm choices all seem to be disappearing and has been said, they’re sticking with 40 and 44 (and up). I don’t mind - I’ve been gravitating towards smaller watches. Would love to give a hypothetical 40mm sub a shot.

My 21 year old son noted today that the 42mm 574 did not really "stand out" on my wrist. While that is a bit anti-Panerai, I took the comment positively. For me, a dressy watch should not be standing out (especially to a 21 year old). This is likely one of the more subtle watches in the Panerai line-up... Only concern with going smaller is the question of how tall? To go smaller one may be relegated to the Due-type WR of 30M so the watch does not become unbalanced/top heavy on the wrist.

Indeed, it’s subtle (for a PAM). That’s why I like it!

I am rocking my sub now and even it is only 13mm or so thick, still 300m.





I have the 1271 Quaranta as well. It’s 100m WR and slides under a sleeve fine for a casual day at the office.

I had to submit a Form 5106 through FedEx when box arrived at US customs identifying me as the importer without intent to resell. Form submitted in early morning and Customs released Watch by that evening and delivery occurred next day. I expect to get an invoice from FedEx in 1-2 weeks for tariffs. Based on reading various posts I expect $100-$200 for this $5K watch. Now, my imported JDM $3K-$4K High Accuracy Seiko and Citizen watches were billed $0 because I guess quartz watches are exempt from tariffs (?).

I had concerns the alligator strap my create issues due to CITES treaties, but no issue.

Terrific watch the 01392! Sold mine, not so smart, had remorse. Recently bought a well kept Blue Dial (01028) back. At the moment at the Panerai AD for a movement service.

These are my lovely 42mm Panerai: PAM00960, PAM00574 and PAM00927.
They are gorgeous and do not lose the Panerai style, even though they are smaller, but under 42 mm a Panerai no longer makes sense.

Congratulations, that’s a cracking pick up! I love this model and own it’s predecessor (PAM00512).

Works well on leather, rubber and even ribbed NATOS look the part! Love mine.

44mm is too big for my 6.5 inch wrist. The Submersible is perfect.

I believe I purchased one of the very last 1535 42mm GMTs available (they told me it had been discontinued).

I love it, but I have noticed it seems they are going away from 42mm, which would be my sweet spot.

FYI, just got the FedEx customs bill… $58 for a $5K purchase. I’m pretty pleased with that.
