A Spy's Rolex

15 or 20 years ago, an FBI agent named Robert Hanssen was arrested (and subsequently convicted) for being a Russian spy. Among the things that the Russians supposedly gave him in payment for his spying were two Rolexes.

According to the indictment, the two Rolexes had the serial numbers L859772 and R16710A30B9315/E458859.

The International Spy Museum in DC has an exhibit about Hanssen. Included as part of it is what's labeled "Hanssen's Rolex, ca. 1990." I have no reason to doubt the provenance of the watch; it's part of a world-class museum with a robust curatory staff.

Hanssen's Rolex on display is supposed to be a SD 4000, which I guess is intended to be a triple 6 based on the matte dial and painted indexes. But take a look at it. Can we count the things wrong with it? And do either of those serial numbers correlate with what this Sea Dweller is supposed to be?

What's that old expression? No honor among thieves?

One fugly rep.

What is up with the crown touching the 12 index? That super short hour hand? The font on Rolex?

And then there is the obvious stuff.

Pierce Brosnan probably stole the authentic model and replaced it with the fake

Does it shoot laser, have rotating bezel that cut ropes, can unzip ladies dress with magnet?

If not, then it’s a FAKE!

Lousy Russians!

Giving out fake watches to foreign agents...
It’s like they are untrustworthy or something.

That is 100% fake. Russians either gave him a fake Rolex, or the curator has put a (pretty shoddy) look-a-like on display.

R16710A30B9315/E458859 ... this is an E serial GMT (with a 93150 oyster bracelet). L859772 I guess is an L serial something..you say it was a Seadweller but the watch pictured is junk...

The KGB had to use a fake, because they are still waiting for one from their AD.

I would be careful about accusing the curator of this museum of intentionally displaying a fake. I think the real story is that the Russians gave Hansson a fake but the museum itself may not be aware.

He was foolish to spy for the enemy and, even worse, he seemed even more foolish to be bribed with a $10 fake made in some Moscow back alley
