Icon5 Are we there yet? Vintage or no?

Here's one of the earliest OysterQuartz models. 5.23 serial, 1977, single line. So it's 37 years old. On the other hand, sapphire crystal, quartz movement. What say you guys (especially the Vintage experts and collectors)? Does this qualify for Vintage status yet?

May as well make it a poll....

Cheers.

I'm certainly not an expert but that is a vintage watch in my book. And a very nice one at that.

I'd call it vintage.

By the way, were there any other models with sapphire crystals back in '77?

Yes, absolutely vintage (in my book if a person born the same year as the watch has been able to develop grey hair).

Thanks. Interesting so far, I thought it would be about 50/50. Dave, the OQ is often cited as the first sapphire crystal Rolex but there were one or two refs that had them in the early 1970s, I believe.

The 1530 was made from about '74-'78.

Adam, I'm far from an expert but I'd say vintage without a doubt in my book. Love your OQ!

Definitely vintage and a great looking watch! The new issue of WatchTime magazine has an excerpt from a new book detailing Rolex's venture into quartz...should be a good one!

Absolutely vintage!
I know we all try to put hard and fast rules around vintage or not...but it's almost a piece-by-piece judgement. Certainly that it's no longer made, and hasn't been for a number of decades is a qualifier, no?

I absolutely love the OQ. Would love to pick up a gold one with a blue or black dial.

Ah, thanks Adam. That's cool. I didn't realize that they had any models with sapphire that early. Your OQ is really cool, I dig that blocky look.

I'd like to hear from the four who voted that it was not vintage. We haven't had a "what is vintage" conundrum for a while.

Sapphire has nothing to do with vintage IMHO. I collect day dates 18038 for example and they also started 1977 with sapphire and are vintage IMHO. Others subs are made far after that and are classed vintage.
