Hi All.

I’ve been a member of the forum now for a bit over a month so thought it time to introduce myself. My reason for joining, and indeed for becoming a Rolex owner, is bittersweet. My father just passed away on February 2nd and I now have his reference 16750 GMT Pepsi. Dad bought it new in Geneva in the early 1980s and was very proud of it, and now I am proud to continue to wear it in his honor. As you can see from the watch, he did not baby it, so it shows his use.

I was unsure on whether to have the watch cleaned up at all, knowing that is my father’s scratches that make it what it is and what he was looking at for over thirty years. But my step-sister told me she’d heard Dad mentioning having it restored, and she went on to reassure me that he would be very happy to see it looking more like new. So with the comfort of that knowledge, I’m going to have it serviced and cleaned up a bit.

To many, he was CWO-4 (Eng.) Robert D. Hall USCG (Ret.). To me, he was Dad.

A workhorse indeed! That fairly well describes my dad too (over 42 years of active duty military), who was always working on something pretty much right up until the last couple of years; he was 84 when he died. Clearly he didn’t take the watch off when working. It actually looked a bit worse, but I buffed the crystal out, mostly so I could read the watch better. I know I’m going to have the crystal replaced when the watch is serviced, and the bezel insert replaced. I’ll leave the face alone, but I am thinking of having the hands polished and re-lumed if possible. I know that is considered heresy for collectable vintage watches, but this one is never going to be sold or traded, so I consider that point somewhat moot.

I knew almost nothing about Rolex watches before joining this forum so I thank the contributors here for all the wonderful knowledge I’ve been able to learn in just a short time. One thing your wisdom and experience has taught me is that I can’t go far wrong sending the watch to Rik Dietel at Time Care for service. And after that, the bracelet will be off to Michael Young for some rejuvenation. I really look forward to seeing Dad’s watch sparkle and shine. As I mentioned, I think he’d like that. I’ll be sure to show it off here when it’s done.

Suggest you have Rik save all the parts to be replaced and send back to you so you'll always have the original components for historical purposes when it's your turn to pass on the watch.

Welcome, that's a beautiful watch with a great story behind it. Now you can add to that or when you eventually pass it on. Just imagine all of the things that watch must have seen and been through with your father. Heirloom watches like that are so special. Rik will take good care of it. Good advice also to ask him for all of the replacement parts back.
