How is Panerai Viewed These Days?

I have been thinking about scratching my Panerai itch, however I am hesitant.

The reason that I am hesitant is wondering how the brand is going.

I typically do not sell my watches, but I do like to know how the brand currently is currently seen, and want to know that I am not going to loose all my money if I need to liquidate/trade it.

I am also concerned about fakes/movement in the market.

The one that I am interested in is a Radiomir from around 2005-2006. I would only be buying from a trusted seller that has been around for a long time.

I have learned that in the past they were having a large fake problem, to the point where you could not sell the watches in the secondary market.
Is that still a problem?

Do you think that Panerai is worth collecting any more?

How do you see the secondary market for Panerai?

Thank you.

Shouldn’t this be posted in the Panerai forum?

I put Panerai as slightly better than hublot and slightly worse than breitling. Although breitling is leaving it further behind with the 2021 launches.

Buy preowned with box and papers from a trusted re-seller or someone who has a lot of references.

Open casebacks with an in house movement are harder to replicate/copy.

If you have a wrist larger than 6.5” also helps :) or o guess you can get a 42mm

Lots of great pieces!

Here is my mini Panerai

I’m with you on tracking down 10 plus year older Panerai, I had been eyeballing the 111 for the last 2 years or so until I stumbled onto a reputable seller on WUS selling a full set along w Panerai service papers as well. The newer ones don’t really do it for me other than the 911 model from 2018 (& that 2020 brown dial LE Radomir).

Panerai is not as hot as it was back in the early 2000s. but i still get the appeal as i miss my Pam112.

The brand seems to be heading down a dead end.

Panerai have some amazing models and I am happy to own one (a 231) but they have beaten me to death over the years with all their model numbers.

panerai has decent history in the military, while other brands dive watches all look alike nowadays, the cushion shape of panerai cases are quite unique and attractive. although the simplistic design makes it easier to fake, it's still a very unique watch brand.

I have liked Panerai since the early 2000s but I only had the opportunity to own one in 2017, 590, which I sold about a year later. I waited that long because I too wondered if it was a brand, that as unique as it is, it would ...... continue to be relevant.
I am getting older now and I realize that life is too short, and that no longer matters. As long as the piece you chose is relevant to you, than that is all that matters.
I for one am chasing one now and hope to be able to be a Panerai owner again, very soon.
All the best.

It have collected pocket watches for over 40 years. I have seen the market rise and fall many times during that time. Something that seems to only matter to traders and investors. But since social media has become the communication standard, It seems that what ever a few like (Be it realistic or not) the "herd" seems to run with it like the running of the bulls. Watches that are hot now are not necessarily worthy of there new found status of worth and popularly. That is why one watch that has one extra screw may be worth $2k more than the same model with out. Rarity, one of a kind etc. Now there are companies charging outrages prices while resting on there loreals and not up to the standards they once were just a few years ago. But it has the name, and MR. Smith has one, so the herd follows and the manufacture are gathering the money as fast as they can. This would not happen 30 years ago. They would be out of business. But times have changed. The masses just follow instead on looking at pieces for what they really are. Most only know what they have been told or read from not so reliable sources and back room discussions. A student of horology will see through the hype and recognize a high quality watch for what it is, regardless on the brand, social hype or current trend. My point is, If you have a great high end watch, then be proud to own it, cherish it for what it is, not what the market bares, what someone else thinks or the resale value. In fact, there are some pretty darn good buys out there only because the "herd" is not grappling for it. That is the one you should be buying. I think Panerai is doing pretty well. The 'HERD" does not seem to realize just how good they really are. Stop and think about it. They are exceptional quality and offer a 8 year warranty. That alone should turn on a light bulb. Just my thoughts. I always thought you buy when the market was down, Being just looking for a great deal or as a investor. So if i believe a watch is great quality, and the price's are down.... Well I'm all over it. If I think a watch is not as good as quality as advertised but the prices are going for twice retail, Then I won't touch it with a 10 ft. pole. Just saying.

It’s simple economics, if the brand is currently being seen as not desirable then there are buying opportunities to be had and if the brand is hot then you will pay a premium knowing that nothing lasts forever. However, if you buy a watch that speaks to you and wear it because you enjoy it then none of the above matters.

Thank you.

I have been going between the the 00098, the 00268, or even the 00138 (with the display back).

I am also not as keen of their newer models, although the 424 and 425 are appealing as well, however I want a seconds hand.

Take your time, try a few on. You will know when you find the "one"

I would not personally buy a 10k plus model. I have a 000 because its everything I wanted. Love it and the lower entry cost means it owns me very little. Great vacation watch and something that is just different.

In my area/ circle of friends, Panerai seem to be doing strong. When I go to my local cafe, on any given day I usually spot 2 or 3 Panerai's on wrists. Mostly models from the submersible range. I have also been noticing Panerai's in the media on people's wrists. There are still many models that have retained their initial purchase price or have seen slight increases. I think the problem lies, as others have mentioned, in the fact that Rolex, PP and AP are all seeing ridiculous secondary market pricing, so any other brand is assumed to be slumping. Buy what speaks to you, not what's the hot watch on social media!

Personally, I do not care how Panerai is viewed by others.
Don’t care about Paneria’s shady history or its uncertain future.
And not much u can do about fakes... but be diligent when buying.
Value retention- unless u buy on an impulse, u should be fine.

I care about how I view a specific watch.
If I like it, I buy it.
And I liked few of Panerai models because they are unique and badass. Lol
So now I got couple of em. Pam911 below.

Also, I rank it waaaay higher than breitling hahaha

Would rather spend £4K on a used Panerai to put on my wrist & not worry too much about it than spend £26k on a used SS Daytona & be paranoid about putting a scratch on it incase it affected its future ‘investment’ potential.

I remember only a few years ago looking at watches as things to wear & enjoy not as commodities to trade & make money.

Try to look at Panerai for what they are now & not what they might become in the future - you never know, you might actually get a little enjoyment out of it.

i'm really not sure about overall brand perception. All I can say is that I've owned several panerais, but never more than one at a time. I don't think it's the type of brand I could see myself having a collection.

They don't do themselves any favors with the sizing either. Arguably one of their hottest watches (the bronzo) is insanely large for most wrists. I know they just released the 42mm bronze blue, but I like the colors and bezel on the 47mm better.

Actually I didn't own a Panerai for years and it took something (what I feel) is really special to get me back in.

Panerais stand out from the crowd. Good to have one for any enthusist, but choose the classic designs. i think Panerai should stick to their heritage and design direction, and focus on a niche market with limited editions or production runs. Going into "e" and funky colours are not something that I dont think will go well for them. For me, somehow recycle and luxury somehow does not gell well.

As someone who recently joined the PAMily here is what i've found:
Fakes- usual rules apply, buy from proven sellers/agents and you'll be fine

Appeal- the 2 most common views on Panerai seem to be either "they make some great stuff thats outside the norm" or "they depreciate like a stone due Panerai flooding their own market with too many models and too many LEs". Obviously, these are 2 conflicting sentiments so you need to decide if you're in the "buy what you love camp" or the "this is an investment camp"

If you're buying pre owned, you'll likely dodge the bulk of the depreciation but you'll still likely have to take a small-ish loss if/when you go to sell. If that really bothers you, you may want to look elsewhere

Personally, I shopped smart for my PAM311, picked it up at a slightly lower than market price from a reputable dealer and have made piece with the fact that my cost of ownership should i ever want to sell will likely be 10%-20%.
I've lost a lot more money on a lot less, plus i seldom sell watches, so resale is pretty low on my priority list

Not sure about 'collecting', kind of same problem with collecting Royal Oaks. Really, one will do.

In terms of brand value, I'm not sure the parent company excels in enhancing how their brands are viewed. However, I do think Panerai has done a great job in terms of new design within their design language and new materials to keep the line fresh and exciting on the fashion side.

Unique horological brand that still stands out from the herd with its unmistakable timeless design. That Italian flair is always in their DNA allows them to push the envelope of materials and models making them a very exciting brand. Build quality and fit and finish is absolutely top shelf. Panerai is not for the conservative herd mentality of buyer and they never were.

You either get what Panerai is all about or you don’t. Unfortunately those that don’t get it tend to be newbies that like to talk trash about the brand but that is becoming a badge of honor considering where the talk is coming from. Every now and then I get into a in-depth discussion of Panerai in-house movements, real world performance, etc..with these people and that’s where they tend to show their ignorance. I am just happy that the carpet baggers are picking at the Rolex bones instead of the Panerai these days taking the Panerai brand back to the Paneristi enthusiast.

Panerai still has its high profile presence in film, pro sports and entertainment.

Here's a real-world example. During my trip to Vegas last weekend the TSA agent at TPA noticed my PAM01033 and we had a great chat about the brand, different models / straps, etc. Great time chatting about fun and good times, no chat of value or flipping or other rubbish like many 'Rolex guys' do here on TRF.

I'll add Panerai's customer service is TOP notch and efficient / timely (basically the opposite of Patek, and I've had ~10 PPs over the decades, sold all but one). Have NEVER had a bad (or snobby) experience with Panerai specialists.

You have a choice, party in Vegas with the current 'breed' of Rolex... or Panerai enthusiasts... I know which party I'd attend for a fun n' wild time.

Every year I’ve tried on several of these watches and I like everything about the brand - the appearance, the warranty, the service - but each time I try one on and it’s clearly too large.

I’m very happy with my Panerai on my wrist, so, I think Panerai is doing just fine.

Is it the crazy hype of the 2000s? No. Not that it matters - one can’t wear hype. One can wear a watch that makes one happy.
