Chihuahuas.

I have three rescue dogs. All chihuahuas or chihuahua-sized dogs. I HATED chi's growing up because I had never met any who weren't shaking, yipping, sniveling, snapping piles of irritation. Somehow, I lucked into a very well-adjusted pack of rescue kids.

We've actually fostered about 20 dogs over the last 2 years - most puppy mill breeders - because our dogs have such a well-adjusted pack, they're able to teach new dogs coming in social skills, how to interact with humans and basic household behavior (not to potty in the house).

Yes, all of ours are ex-racers. Some tracks facilitate adoptions, or you can easily go through a rescue society.

Preferred dog breed?

What’s my preferred breed ? Well, I don’t know the official “breed” name, but I’ll try to describe it .....................

) It’s the breed that looks at you through the cage, wishing someone would care enough to help.

) The breed that only wants a person to adore, serve, and make happy the rest of its life.

) It may be the breed that will sit in your old work truck and have lunch with you at a moments notice.

) Sometimes it’s the breed that makes you laugh.

) But most of all, it’s the breed that screams in pain as the toxic gas enters it’s lungs, literally burning it to death from the inside because some prefer a “breed”.

* When it’s lungs try to take their last breath, I wonder, does it know that someone actually bought a “breed” to impress themselves and their friends instead of giving them a chance at life ?

*Does it wish someone would have given it a chance to make someone happy ? As the blood rises from inside and runs out of a motionless mouth, does it wish it were a “breed” ?

We used to have a papillon. We loved her, but as far as breeds go, not my favorite.

I love rottweilers. But we probably won't own one for many pragmatic reasons. And I can't fathom cleaning up poop as big as my boots.

That's correct! Down in SoCal there is a great organization called Fast Friends. They rescue retired racers (typically pretty young, anywhere from 1-3 years old generally) from Tijuana and do fostering/adoption events pretty much every month.

Another vote for grey hounds here, especially if you're looking for a dog that doesn't require a ton of exercise/activity. Biggest misconception about the breed is these dogs need a ton of space to run around every day. Reality seems to be the farthest from that -- they're over-sized couch potatoes that just have a whole lot of love to give!

P.S. for some reason I am not surprised at all by Tyler's preferred dog breeds. There is an Irish wolfhound in our neighborhood that we occasionally see on morning walks on the weekend. I was amazed by the size the first time I saw him -- turns out he is just a big softy and was as nice as could be.

I grew up with Golden’s, but my then Gf (now wife) wanted a bulldog, so we got a bulldog a few months before graduating college. Through meeting dogs and breeders I fell in love with the breed.
Porkie is over 10.5 years old and doing well. I’ll always have a bulldog. Smart, stubborn, hilarious, great with my <2 year old, handles road trips, swims, etc etc.

Currently have a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier named Murphy.

He has a very strong prey drive. He'll chase and kill any animal smaller than him. It's a real problem. Really it's the only thing we don't like about him. He's turning 10y/o this fall and is still full of energy and hyper. He's a lot of fun. Really good company.
The next dog will probably be a golden retriever or a mutt.

We've had and have Long Hair Miniature Dachshunds since forever...
When my Mrs immigrated to Canada from Denmark, 'Cognac' also had 'his' passport and papers in order.
We've had them in pairs, with a cat and bird and now it's our little 'Trica'..who graces us with her presence.
Now at 4+ years old...
