Robbed for SS Daytona... should i go grey

So i was abroad and long story short i ended up getting driven out of town and mugged for my Daytona. I was besides myself upset obviously.

It was insured luckily and i have managed to get £12k back (my insurance limit) which is fair seeing as list is sub-10k. So now i've obviously phoned every dealer in the world and had no luck. I bought the watch in 2006 in NYC and now live in London.

Is there a way that as a prior owner I could get one from an AD?
Or failing that, how am I going to get one now?

I have found a grey market one at 19,500 unworn, so i suppose i could top up the extra £7.5k and pretend i got a ceramic upgrade for the extra money?!!!

Sorry to hear that.

Where and how did it happen? Which city and which country? (if you don't mind sharing . . . .)

Also very sorry to hear this! Terrible and frightening news.

As for insurance, I insure all my watches at market value regardless of what I paid and/or retail value. I know it help you today but moving forward I’d scoop up another at gray market, insure it and put this behind you.

That turned quickly. Sorry to hear, and glad you're ok. You'll find another watch, things will change.

Geez, sorry OP - truly hope you will recover some of your loss and move on. You are here and that's the bottom line.

Man, this board has its own special brand of terrible and nasty, that's for sure...on display daily too.

Ah thanks. The waiting list / lack of even being able to get on one is super frustrating when your been a legitimate owner since 2006. I’m thinking that grey market is the only option for me. At least I’m only paying less than rrp out of my own pocket.

I’d be inclined to go back to your original AD to see if they would be winning to assist in helping you source another one

You really need to tell the whole story here. Where, when why and how. Of course you know the value of your watch.

Robbed for SS Daytona... should i go grey

I’m just curious why others are calling BS. A title is meant to summarize the thread. He was robbed and is considering going grey. What’s the issue?

Is there something I’m missing? Why would it benefit op to lie?

Thank you. It makes no difference to me if people believe me or not. What a sad life I would be living if I was to post random stories on forums in my spare time at 2am in the morning. I sourced a grey replacement that I need to make a decision on in the morning else it’s going to go and I thought I’d seek some opinions. I don’t know if grey market is trusted or not, but seems to be the only option. The watch will have 3 years left on warranty, will that transfer to me if sold preowned? Etc etc.

I run an advertising agency in nyc and london, and obviously can’t go around asking my staff. I am lucky enough to be in a position to afford luxury’s watches. And I’m here to seek advise from people with a common interest. Thanks to everyone that’s helped. And to anyone calling BS on my post, thanks for nothing, hope you feel better for being a keyboard warrior to someone you’ve never met. Pretty cowardly!

Sorry to hear this. It is unfortunately part of the downside to Rolex’s recognizability from 15 feet away. And with today’s sky high premiums vs. lower insurable values, wearing these hot watches can be risky. And if that’s not enough, if you need to replace one, there are huge waiting lists.

Not sure what happened on your thread OP, I apologize on behalf of all the great members here and hope you locate a watch asap. You’ll have a better/cheaper chance of getting one here in the US than the smaller UK market but, not from an AD on either side of the Atlantic would be almost impossible.

Well said. Are people perhaps getting more bitter because they can’t get the watches they want when they want them?

OP - I'm so sorry for what happened to you but glad you're okay. It's a shame now that the world has come to a state where people are getting mugged and/or killed for their watches or luxury goods which they have worked to obtain or were gifted.

You may be able to speak to an AD and tell them your story of what happened. You might get lucky and get something out of the vault but it might not be a Daytona.

If you do pick it up from the grey dealer, the warranty will follow the watch not the owner so the warranty will be good!

Keep us posted on what you decide and not everyone on the board is rude there are many great people on this forum! =)

Well, you’ve got your health, that’s the main thing!

Now go watch shopping.

I’d get a 5d Daytona again. Your £12k can get you a fine one without topping up.

Thanks for your help all. I’ve been an avid follower since I bought a PP two years ago.
Good advice on the larger US market. I think I’ll stop and not rush into buying the first replacement I’ve seen. I am off to SF and Seattle next week so I may visit a few stores there and see what I find. Thanks for your support.

And for people that were asking. It was in Cannes, France at a festival. Apparently it’s very common on the coast out there.

What’s a 5d? Older models are still £15k here it seems
