I apologize. I didn’t realize it was 1.5 billion I thought it was 1 billion. So you are correct my calculations are wrong. That lowers it to .000053% of the Chinese population have contracted coronavirus.

And I agree with you one is too many.

Oh? I'm from the States so I am not familiar with Daily Mail's reputation.

How about Slate? Is that more reputable? How about Imperial College London? Is that more reputable? Both say less than 1%. (edit: added less than) You two seem to confuse the validity of the message with that of the messenger.

I know. I might hurt myself. I'm pretty much done on the subject so I will be going back into hibernation.

the Coronavirus outbreak thread

I suggest hitting the pause button for anyone seeing a news item in any media channel that contradicts existing reports by the WHO, CDC, NIH, or any recognized health organization.

Perhaps trace the news item to the cited source(s) and link to them rather than the news channel.

This eliminates the error rate created by those media news producers who jump to be first - and then later must correct or worse retract them item.

I think our goal should be info quality vs. speed to report.

And I wasn’t able to discern what exactly makes the ER doc who penned a piece for Slate a “leading doctor.” Even though everybody knows the best docs are ER docs.

Why do people continue to travel overseas to known hot spots? Harris county had a news special on a couple who travels to Egypt and had a lay over in Italy late last week has tested positive for the virus....so everybody on the flight has been exposed plus people working in Bush Airport and cab/uber drivers etc. To have a chance at stopping the spread they must stop all international flights from known virus hot spots.....if not soon everywhere is going to be infected Corona virus....Im over 60 and high risk so I bought a month worth of food and going to stay home as much as possible. I was going to travel to Minneapolis the April 5th but thats not going to happen anytime soon now.

the Coronavirus outbreak thread

I understand your POV Greg.

It would slow down the spread of the virus perhaps. But eventually it would circle the globe anyway.

Curtailing all travel in/out of hotspots might change the spread from perhaps 1-2 months to perhaps 6-8 months. But eventually there will be instances of the virus in any city with an airport.

The couple you mentioned may not have thought through their 1-stop flight from Egypt when they made the reservations. I understand another person from Fort Bend County was along with them and is also infected.

Or perhaps the flights were planned long before Italy became a hotspot. Once they were locked-in, they may not have had the money to cancel and rebook the trip to/from Egypt.

I don’t necessarily think they were insensitive - it could have been something they had little control over.

Transmission to our hometown is something we should emotionally prepare ourselves to hear.

I guess what some of you guys are thinking is that we are going to find out in the next couple weeks to a couple of months that many hundreds of thousands if not millions of Americans have this virus right? And many more millions beyond that around the world? Or you think at the least it’s a possibility?

I think what we are all going to find out in a month is that we’re utterly f’d economically. CCP is also asking the US for and an apology and gratitude from the world AND that the virus didn’t originate there. We all know where this is going. It’s going to be an ugly ride regardless of getting sick or not.

There is zero reason for us to be “f’d” economically unless a pandemic occurs. At least not in the US. I have no idea where this is going. I do know if we shut down the news for about two weeks about 99% of the hype would go away. Fear comes from the 24 hour news cycle and and as I stated before they are the main players and instigators in all of this.

Because there is a serious outbreak and we need to know about it.

You mean you believe there’s going to be a serious outbreak and we need to know about it. Right now there’s less than 100,000 people worldwide infected.

Corona isn’t doing the damage, it’s the panic. It’s a flu that hits older people harder so naturally the mortality is going to be higher.

You can choose to ignore the news media if you like, but obviously it's being reported for a reason. I'd rather stayed informed than be ignorant, regardless of how serious the outbreak is. It's something new and unknown. Lots of opinions flying around.

I should mention I'm a certified germophobe

I think it’s being reported because that’s how money is made
