What sort of dial do I have on my watch?
Hi all,
I have recently purchased a lovely 6694 with a silver dial. It is horizontally brushed. I'm just wondering what sort of dial this is, and how it was made? Someone pointed out to me that it could possibly be a mosaic dial? Many thanks all |

Isn't that a linen dial?

It's a no lume silver brushed dial. There are some that are vertically brushed as well as this type of horizontal brushing, but I believe both are just known as brushed dials.
The mosaic, or Shantung, dial has more of a brick like pattern, usually with a few lighter and darker segments: Mosaic dial - Silver.jpg The linen dial has the horizontal lines but also has some vertical lines, and both look like threads: Untitled.jpg |

Looks closer to a Shantung dial to me.

Hi,
I thought some more photos could help. There are absolutely no vertical lines on this dial. Only horizontal ones. |

So perhaps that may be more appropriate, but I’ve also seen modern shantung dials with a solid tone brushed finish like this.

From a quick 6694 image search, it seems like those steel pencil-type hands are also pretty uncommon in this no-lume variant (and yours look to be in very good condition).
As to how it was made, probably it’s a brass backing plate like most, plated in aluminum (? - or steel?) and then literally brushed with a wire brush. |

My answer was not bad, but too fast, sorry!
At first I only subconsciously noticed "Precision" on the dial, and only later did it dawn on me that the brick, shantung or mosaic dials are belonging to the Datejusts, Oyster Perpetuals, and so on, but not for the Precisions. So, I searched on, and found another naming for your dial: "Silver Stripe Texture". Congratulations on your new beauty! |

Looks like a type of Shantung Mosaic dial. Interesting discussion here: https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=607529 |
