Rolex Explorer 114270 vs 124270

I would prefer the 124270

New one in every way for me.

Way more legible with the bigger loom and brighter printing, and added AR undercoat. Love the bracelet taper as well and micro extension.

That said, I’m trading it back in for Pepsi GMT when my name comes up. I’ve realized that this is the perfect 3 hander… but I’m a complications guy at heart.

I've had many 1016, 14270, 114270, 214270's and now a 124270 over the years. I'd take my 124270 over any of them for daily wear. It is so comfortable that I often find myself forgetting I'm wearing it as the day goes along.

That's an impressive collection of Explorers over the years Jeff! I've had both versions of the 214270 and both of the new versions (steel and two tone). Any one of does the job, but I would agree that the 124270 is probably the best all around. I look at it and can't believe how perfect it is.

The 124273 is the most fun Explorer I've ever owned, but as a one and only GADA - 124270 all day long.

The new Explorer seems very nice for sure, but I don’t know if it is as versatile as the 114270, because it’s not easy to put it on a leather strap or other after market straps, because of the protuberance of metal between the lug. I’m kind of looking at the two watches myself, and this is my sense right now. I’m still debating.

After having it for a few months now, I don't notice it anymore unless I look for it. However, for a couple weeks there--it did bother me.

I wear my 114270 on a leather strap. Even with the longer lugs you need to get a curved strap to avoid the case and the strap rubbing together.

The watch is a strap monster and looks great with different straps. Can completely change the look and feel of the watch with a strap change. IMG_20220517_145402.jpg

I was lucky to visit the AD in December 2021 at the exact time someone canceled their order. Initially I was concerned about 36mm diameter but have found it to be very comfortable and stylish.

For the owners of both, or people who have owned 114270 and 124270 at one point or another, can you speak to the perceivable thickness difference between them? I've always felt that 124270 was just a tad chunky for a simple 3-hand watch and have read that the prior iteration is about half a millimeter thinner. Is that difference accurate and perceivable in real world wearing conditions? Thx.

Went to my AD yesterday specifically to compare the 36 to the 40 on my 6.75” wrist. I’m torn as I really want to add one as an understated piece to my collection.
What I appreciate about the SA I’ve worked with for years is she is brutally honest with her opinion on how something looks on me (which I greatly appreciate).
Felt the 36 looked fine, but I’m not convinced.
I was really disappointed in the 40 as I really thought that would be the one. Something about the dial…can’t quite explain it.

I've owned the 124270 for 9 months now, and it has been my daily. It has yet to run out of power or been hand wound since I got! I agree with the comments on comfort - def been the most comfortable watch I've owned. I also love love love the easylink extension. I use it way more than I thought I would.
The only "but" for me is bracelet taper. I still find the clasp side looks thin, even after all the daily wear. Haven't got used to that. If the bracelet had the dimensions of the 114270 and the robustness of the 124270 it would be perfect.

Here, now, I'd take the 124270 because I prefer a new watch to one that's 15+ years old. Now, if it was the "olden days," where things sat in cases, every watch was available, and (because it's fantasy world) Rolex was transitioning directly from the 114270 to the 124270, with both available out of the case, I'd be torn.
